Are these cars identified? The photos are well known but I don't know the VIN. - light blue 1978 car UK - dark blue car in Germany - silver car with dark green dash top sold by BHCC View attachment 2998591 View attachment 2998592 View attachment 2998593 [/QUOTE] The first one; HLD 680 T is AM120-395. It used t be in quite poor condition and was restored. The photo you post was taken at last year's International meet in Scotland. It used to be darker blue, see photo when McGraths handled its sale for the then owner: Met blue, manual unknown Mid blue interior Owned in 1990 by a Richard Price. Running car not used for 4 years tatty 25k sterling. Update Dec 2016 during my McGrath visit: Andy said it has now been restored. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Great find: AM120-375 sold new by MTC Cars on October 3 1977. I hasten to add that I have this thanks to Andy Heywood but that is the sum total of the data he had on it and I had never seen a photo of it. Talk about a hidden car! Funny my father for a few years in the late fifties ran a knitting and milling subsidiary factory for the family in Blackburn, Lancashire, before I was born but I understand it is not exactly the most glamorous part of the world, an unexpected spot for a K.
Hmm, something doesn’t add up as the gov UK site shows it as first registered September 1982 if you use the vehicle registration number VZ 240. But 375 was sold 1977 you say ? Bal
Hi Bal, VZ240 is 375, who knows if it had another number before and what about the unsolved mystery of LUE 162 V? I say it is 381.
Yes it is strange, on GOV UK the first registration date of VZ240 is September 1982 and the year of manufacture is 1982, that is not what you would expect for a car sold in 1977. Maybe an administrative error on the GOV UK database. But maybe this also means that the owner has to wait until 2022/2023 to enjoy the privileges of owning a 40-year old car (no MOT, no Tax) (see: https://www.admiral.com/magazine/guides/motor/tax-exempt-classic-cars)? The owner of VZ240 won’t like that! Unless he doesn’t know that the car is actually from 1977.
Yes it’s true there could be an admin error, who knows. And as I’m preparing to try to take advantage of the 40 year rule for tax and MOT next year for 433 it’s something the owner of VZ240 should already qualify for if it’s a ‘77 car. 433 was built and shipped in 1980 but wasn’t sold until 1982 so I have to prove with Mr Collina’s help it’s a 1980 car. It won’t qualify until January next year. Bal
Or this one: registration no APH 323T from the IMCDB database https://www.imcdb.org/vehicle_1056661-Maserati-Khamsin-Tipo-120-1979.html Image Unavailable, Please Login
and finally: registration MJ 1862 or MJ 18621 (?) photographed at Coys Int. Historic Meeting 1994, see photo below and registration 666 VBF , as found in an advert of Classic & Sportscar Nov 1991, page 149 Celeste chiaro, Panna, 11200 mls (no photo) Image Unavailable, Please Login
Hi Roger, According to info from the GOV UK website two of them have plates from another car: Registration APH323T is a Maserati with 2965cc so probably a Merak, see also photo below Registration 666VBF is a Ferrari, yellow from 2001 Registration SPC453R looks like a real Khamsin registration, year 1977, so this could be a missing 1977 car? Registration MJ1862 (private plate?) doesn't exist anymore. Image Unavailable, Please Login .
Wow quite a spooky find Roger, will look at my data tomorrow. Do we know where and when this photo was taken?
What I wrote about 666VBF is not correct I think, this is probably a private plate, and it’s possible that it was on a celeste Khamsin in 1991, and it’s now on a yellow 2001 Ferrari. Maybe it was for instance #349 that had these plates for some time.
I must confess to an error due to my own clumsiness; while I tried to identify VZ 240 in the Excel document about UK Khamsins Andy Heywood sent me years ago I thought I was using a search function but the Excel just reproduced what I typed where the highlight box happened to be located...DUH so it is NOT 375, please correct your files, humble apologies. I have listed all these unknown UK plates - which are not listed as current or old registrations in his Excel-and sent them to Andy just now, I will let you know when he responds. I am particularly interested in the silver junkyard car because that is a parts source that should be harvested to the benefit of keeping other K's on the road.
Hello Marc Hello AMLC sorry but I have not taken note of the website, I saved the picture of SPC 453R in January 2019 but here you can see for yourselves the Ad in C&SC I was talking about (666 VFB) is there a possibility the registration can be transferred from one car to another? Image Unavailable, Please Login
Hello Roger, yes according to the GOV UK site you can transfer a private number from one vehicle to another.
Hi Roger, The uk registration numbers are fairly simple. In August 1963 the plates took the form of three letters then up to 3 numbers then a suffix letter starting with The letter A in 63. Plates before then carry no association with a particular year and hence are called dateless or private. There have been subsequent plate format changes suffix letter format ran out in early 2002. The rule is you can change the registration plate but not to one that signifies a later year than the original registration if the car. The example of SPC 453R is for the year 01 August 1976 to 31 July 1977. And that’s a sad looking car which keeps company in that picture with other sad looking cars in some sort of horde. Bal
Hello Bal Thanks for your explanations, if this is the case, in my mind that leaves only AM120 347 as a possible VIN. All others in that time span are identified. I looked up my records again, and found a remark, the picture was taken in 2016 in Norfolk, if that helps anybody.
During the launch of the MC20 last night (not to be discussed here please) the mix of images meant to show the heritage of the Trident showed several photos of a white Khamsin, that is AM120-270 of Alberto C. from Modena, a car that has often been borrowed by Maserati for shows etc and which came to KHAMSIN QUARANTA. On the way home it convoyed from Burgundy to Modena with the Granturismo driven MM Cozza and Collina of Maserati Classiche. Regarding the UK junkyard car yes I agree Roger 347 is a candidate, one that remained totally under the radar. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Right Andy Heywood (of McGrath Maserati who knows UK K's like no one else) answered and he is not at all familiar with these few mystery UK cars that have come up here in the last few days. Some he knows because he has serviced them or seen them at events but some he has never seen or heard of. He does however agree with me that the mysterious LUE 162 V is in fact AM120-381 long ago with a previous number plate. Here two photos of LUE 162V and the rest as it is now, owned by Paul S in Scotland. I know some like Bal disagree but registration plates, even in England are not like a head on a human body they can be swapped, legally or not. The point is in my view this can only be 381. During the Tour Auto 1998 a 512S took part owned by a Hong Kong man, the car was based in England so I asked why does it have a texas plate? The Brit in charge of the car laughed and said oh that hung on the wall in the workshop! The cars were getting police escort on the road during the rally so were not about to have a pesky traffic stop. ...and in other news Fabio just sent me the data on 347, bingo it is argento (silver) and matches the junkyard car. Good guess Roger Now I want to find it. For VZ240 I thought (based on the (limited) info I have) 437 or 417. Information from GOV UK site: VZ240 is a 1982 car, colour maroon. Based on that year 437 is an option. But for 417 I have this: “8 May 1992 Sotheby's, Hendon London, cond 3, 29000 mls, nice, estimate $ 27-32000 1980 Maroon/Magnolia”. So that’s maroon like VZ240 but 1980 (although in theory 417 could have a 1982 registration, if it was sold later like 433 (and for instance 401 which is also registered at GOV UK as a 1982 car)). So I don’t know, 417 or 437. I don’t have photos or the catalog of the 1992 auction.
Hello AMLC 417 is actually a 1980 car, as I have info about its registration RNV 37V 437 to my mind is still in South Africa, and has been there at least since 2010, until recently if I judge by the Maserati Levante next to it Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
The Black / beige car in Seattle can be seen on a recent video, it has registration no 848 BUI https://www.picuki.com/media/2376376798961586702
Hello Roger, Ok then VZ240 (1982) is probably not #417.(1980). And I think the car in South Africa is #439? That would mean that VZ240 is probably #437. In theory (because #401 has a 1982 registration) #407 could also be an option for VZ240, I have nothing on #407, or is that already identified?
439 is in South Africa, last Khamsin built (not highest RHD number but last built of ALL). Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
