Has anyone installed a high torque starter on a Khamsin? The starter appears to be the same as a Ghibli, Indy and possibly a Bora. I could have my current starter rebuilt but a modern high torque starter would be a better solution.

Yes, I fitted one to #393.
The supplier sent me one for an Indy, and it needed a new adaptor plate designing and making, since the orientation is completely different.
I finished up replacing one of the studs with a bolt, since the solenoid assembly was in the way.
Also made a new heat shield.
Worth doing , but not trivial..
Can send you the drawing of the adaptor plate..
    Neil.

Thank you for the warning Neil. I decided to take the starter apart to see what was wrong. Cleaned it and swapped a couple of brushes with another starter I have. I have two additional core starters. One from a Ghibli and the other from an Indy (I think). Other than slight differences in the solenoids I could not see a different in the starter itself.
The Khamsin starter is back in the car and seems to be working well. I had to do the removal and installation laying on my back as I could not start the car to put it on the lift. That starter is heavy!

Yes and its seller was reasonable as I told him this morning unlike the seller of a 5 speed lhd project in Belgium whose car is worse and for which he absolutely wants 30% more! I told that one I am not Dom Quichote and will not chase windmills/naive overpaying buyers for him on my time and dime.

The buyer of 373 contacted me this morning, he is on the ball and in fact already has a very good Khamsin.

    Hi Mark,

A clear case of majority rules: do your car the way most are.

Fyi that car was best of show at K40 yet the two judges MM Cozza and Collina did not mention that matter to me in the post concours meeting which proves the point that it is nothing to be concerned with.

Good luck and please share some photos when you can.

    Hello Mark,
the joints at front quarters, rear quarters, rockers were filled with sealer.
At the beginning and End of the joints evenly filled to the body shell (lets say 20mm); in the mid section the joints are deeper sealed.
Your fotos are more or less correct. Attached better fotos of an original / untouched car.
    Best Regards
    Marek

Thanks both. Useful info. Unfortunately my car is mostly plates badly welded over rust in those areas. I’ll aim to reinstate the seams. Cheers

    Update:

Happy new year to all Khamsinisti with lots of spirited miles behind the wheel!

KHAMSIN CINQUANTA (K50 is the short name) will take place June 15-18 2023 near Geneva, Switzerland and I am happy to say there is a lot of interest and expectation!

I am finishing the K50 event PDF presentation invitation registration and will send it in a few days to those Khamsin owners I am in contact with. If you don't think I have your email contact me either via private message here or via the Registry website:

    http://www.maseratikhamsinregistry.net/

Registration will open as soon as the PDF is sent out and will close March 15, three months to the day before the event starts so everyone can prepare properly. There are now 5 months of time to get ready so plan ahead, know that getting cars ready ca take longer than expected so give it plenty of buffer time and be proactive with your garage/mechanic if they need to do any work. Make it very clear to them that the car cannot be delayed. If you drive little then you probably need to get a service scheduled. I would advise against any big intervention that could delay the car's return into your hands.

Two cars I am keen to locate since I am not in touch with their owners are 1264 in Germany (gold, restored) and 1290 in Holland (fly yellow restored). There are also several tucked away cars in Switzerland, not seen for many years, that I would like to find out more about and hopefully join us.

In Europe and the UK there are 160 cars in running condition. Before even opening registrations 22 owners and cars are committed and many more are very eager to come so we will easily blow past the 27 car record of KHAMSIN QUARANTA in 2012.

Two USA owners are coming with their cars specifically for K50 as is one from New Zealand! He will be hard to beat for longest distance traveled award unless an Antarctic pole dweller comes with one!

So after the perfect success of K40 in 2012s K50, set amidst lakes and mountains, will include a tour of the stunning Swiss Jura mountains on beautiful enjoyable roads, private museums (2) and castle visit (1), cocktail receptions, fine dining, a Concours on lake Geneva’s shore with expert Maserati judges, gala awards dinner with dancing.

For those with little time there will be the option of just doing the Saturday: morning drive into Jura, coffee break with fabulous view, then the concours in the afternoon with light lunch, group photo with drone, and optionally the cocktail and gala Awards dinner.

We encourage you to come to K50 with your wife, girlfriend. The schedule like during K40 is one that will please the ladies as well.

Here to whet your appetite is the video of KHAMSIN QUARANTA in 2012: 7:30 minutes of Khamsin paradise with Marcello Gandini as guest of honor:). FYI he will come this year, IF he feels he is in good enough health to do so, therefore no promises as to his presence, time will tell. Many thanks to RV for making it and to PC for editing this version.

More information soon. I have decided not to start a dedicated thread as communication will be directly with owners. I will however share news here.

Attached the event poster and some photos of AM120-160 on some of the stunning roads with great views of the Alps and Jura which are part of the Tour de Jura touring rally we will do.

Its owner was kind enough to drive from Zurich to make this possible. This was in October 2021. He has the true spirit of K50 as he took part in an 8 Khamsin meeting in 2010 near Zurich I organized with a friend, in K40 in 2012 and will be at K50 in June: many thanks L:)!

    Hello to all

I cannot identify these TWO Khamsins on a truck.
The white one seem to miss the windscreen and strange black window surrounds, and black lower part of body side.
They are certainly both built for the US market.
Found the picture under https://www.reddit.com/r/Autos/ apparently published 3 days ago.

    Hello Roger,

Hmm great double find! Link does not bring to photo, could not find it, was there any info about where this was seen? I would assume midwest.
I have never seen a two tone color US K in the US. A Japanese market car which was in the US years ago had the same white with black lower end but it has been in Europe for years and is dark blue now.
It would seem these two cars sat for a long time, probably together.
The photo gives absolutely zero clue...and Russel street could be anywhere...let's see if either or both turn up for sale...

second picture, with info where it was taken, and you can verify from the green sticker on the driving car that it has been taken in 2023!

Hah yes I expected the photo to have been taken in the last few days but at least now we know it is in the US northeast.
My gut feeling is these are cars that have sat for a long time and in the same spot. They certainly have a forlorn, never restored look complete with US bumpers still.

Here is another that used to sit in the New York area, was in very bad shape, was sold a few years ago to a Belgian...and it has at last been restored.
I know he owned 3 K projects, 1038, 1044 and a third. The first two were owned by an unsavory, unpleasant character I once spoke with on the phone, Ed Chalpin, a notrious crook, deceased and this car is one of them.
1044 was briefly owned by Carmine who posts here occasionally.

Good to see this one has been restored and in gorgeous colors (well ok: I am partial, identical to my ex baby:)). It was just displayed at a show in Maastricht, Holland.

Here is what it looked like before 1044 blue and 1038 red, some of these photos by Carmine: a lot of work has taken place!

    Thank you Roger, much appreciated.

    Will contact them.

In other news I sold my 24th Khamsin (it pays the bills a lot better than articles and books!), the project AM120-294 in Belgium, it is headed to Germany for the total restoration it needs. Its buyer is an astute Khamsin connoisseur who has already restored two K's to very high standards so I can't wait to see it ready in a couple of years!

It was originally Tabacco, a beautiful shade of brown with Senape interior (mustard). Date of production 27/12/77. Sold new to Belgium by Staumont the Belgian importer whose additional chassis plate can be seen in the car.

My reaction is, that “dark” roof isn’t. It’s just the shade from the platform above, cast onto the trim around the quarter window, which isn’t revealing much of the white.

That being said, this was taken not very far from me.. in the global scheme of things. I’m 12 mi west of Albany, 6 miles from I-90..

Interesting to see if these crop up for sale soon..

    Thanks for posting.

Lookie here this one fell into a vat of yellow paint!

Not the first instance of painted bumpers though(!) some may recall a year o two ago the aubergine (!) painted one, same.
While the new interior may be nice enough the mechanicals will need complete redo of course. Rust is obviously showing, the tip of the iceberg? Probably. The yellow is pale, not even close to the factory yellow, 1272 below. It is estimated right price wise for someone who wants to tackle it though.

    Hello all:

Opening registrations for KHAMSIN CINQUANTA June 15-18 today!

Twenty two cars were already committed so now with Khamsins coming from the USA, New Zealand and all over Europe and UK we will easily surpass the record of 27 at KHAMSIN QUARANTA in 2012. I will be sending the PDF to all owners I know starting today. If I don't know you and you want to join the largest ever International gathering of this too often forgotten wonder please get in touch without delay as interest is very strong.

Here are teaser extracts of the PDF however I will not post it online for privacy reasons.

FYI I will be at Retromobile in Paris this afternoon and all day tomorrow, hope to see you there!
