    Hi Marc
I have had this hair brained Idea to attend the Maserati 100 Birthday party but the 40th anniversary of the Khamsin seems much more enticing idea.

Don’t get to excited it’s a very expensive exercise to freight a car around the globe.

I would love to drive the car in its home playground. At least at 130k I won’t wind up having the car confiscated and loose my license for three months, or 145k it’s a possible Gaol term.

having said all this I will ask around as others here have done the jurney.

    Regards
    Graeme

    Excellent Graeme:

You would be most welcome and the greatest distance travelled award can (almost) already be engraved with your name on it:)

In researching routes the shortest may not necessarily be the cheapest, the panama canal route could actually be less expensive than via the red sea...what you want is as much as a direct route as possible so that the container is moved around the fewest possible times, ie look for a direct route.
At this scale of travel it does not matter where in eastern Europe your car arrives. Curious to hear what you find out, let me know if I can help on this end.

    best regards,

    Marc

Graeme I meant western Europe of course, must have been something in my coffee!

Here is a little video made by a German owner, I am convinced it is AM120288 Herr A.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kgUFjAJav5U&videos=qQa4iKaMzjo

He emailed me 3 years ago:

    Hello,

    sorry for my bad english.

I'am a owner of an European Khamsin.
I live in Germany and i have bought the car last year in Switzerland
    from a museum in Geneve.

The date for traffic was in Dec.1977 in Switzerland

My car has org. 86.500 km.

    5-speed
    color: marron red metallic
    inside:tan

In Switzerland there is an spezialist for older maserati which
has repair my carburetors, cooling system, hydraulik system(same as Citroen SM)
new tires (for Highspeed in Germany :) ), new exhaust from Stebro in Kanada (e-bay)
and new gasket (Dichtungen??) around motor, axes and so on

I hope i could help you.

    End of quote.

It sounds different due to the Stebro exhaust.

    best regards,

    Marc

    Hi Marc
    From this web site
    http://www.aaa.asn.au/touring/overseas.htm

I have found that just to ship it to europe for "touring purposes"
I need to be a Member of a AAA Australian Automobile Association
then I need to get a document used to identify the vehicle which is called a Carnet de Passages en Douane (CPD) which comes from the French meaning 'notebook'. It is a set of vouchers and Customs simply remove one each time you pass in and out of each country.

I then need to pay a refundable deposite on the full value of the Car!!

Then I need special indemnity insurance premium is based on 2% of the market value of the vehicle with a minimum premium of $300.00 and a refundable deposit of $250.00.

A fee of $400.00 is payable in addition to the amount of security required.

The vehicle must carry current Australian registration while overseas and have an AUS plate fitted near the rear number plate. The AUS plate comes with the Carnet pack.

Then the ruffly 8 thousand dollars for freight there and back.

That equates to $10,050.00 AUD or 7000 Euro and I I havnt left home yet!!

My air fair and some spending money.

Hummm let me think about that...nice idea but

    Hello Nik and Ulf:

One Dutch gentleman who has been in touch with the owner of this car will be speaking to him in the next few weeks and then we can know for sure.

As the gathering of data for any Registry evolves first you find out about the cars that are activley used in clubs etc, then it becomes more difficult to find the cars of owners who keep to themselves, like this gentleman so this will be a satisfying one to pin point. It is not however AM120072 as I thought at one point (that was the number of the photo not the car and I still believe it is 1156: we shall soon know for sure!

    best regards,

    Marc

I would check the possibilities to use an ATA Carnet. I have on several occasions to move goods in and out of the EU without paying customs duties. Worked really well, and fees were very reasonable.

    Hi Henrik
I will explore the site and see what it offers.

I have yet to explore how some other Australians have managed this in the past. There were a few people from the Lancia club that did it a few years ago for Lanica's 100th Birthday.

firstly i would hope to be with you for the 40th!! dijon is only 1200 miles form me so should be able to make it easily!!

Secondly was at silversotne at the weekend for the classic meeting and saw the yellow car. Had seen it at mcgraths last year. I went around the car briefly with Colin Clarke the vintage lambo expert and noted it was for sale. The car seemed clean and body looked fine. Interior was alos nice.
Chatted to the owner on the circuit prior to the parade laps. he is selling as wants a car to use in france where he is moving to. Told him to just take the Khamsin and to look out for you as didnt seem too far away! however def for sale. had to cut it shourt as were ordered back to the cars to start going. I had the Espada there but chatted to the guys from the maser club and met Andy Heywood and lots of others too!

I have about 17-20 masers coming to my car meeting on 15th august

    Hello Paul:

Good to know one of the prettiest Khamsins will be there!

Thanks for the update on the butter yellow car and congrats on your event.

Any Khamsinistas visiting central east France are always welcome, with or without their cars....I open a better bottle if visitors bring their car though!

Look forward to photos of that red car, should be able to identify it...

    Bundas:

Since I was not sure you were referring to my car or the young ladies photographed with it, 26 years apart, I included those -I am sure you won't mind:)- and a comparison of the effect of sulight and cloudy weather in the appearance of oro kelso, the car's color.

I emailed the owners of my ex car a few days ago and have not heard back. Hope all is well.

    best regards,

    Marc

    Graeme,

I think the trick with the ATA is to be affiliated with a local chamber of commerce who then step in and "takes the risk". In this way, you only pay a couple of hundred euros for the carnet. Otherwise, exhibition stand builders are usually experts at this, and could probably arrange a carnet, as well as the transport for you at a reasonable cost.

I hope this helps, would be nice to see you in Europe with the car.

    Regards

    Henrik

Regarding Johan Helenius’ Bora before Yxtaholm manor in Södermanland, where we had dinner and stayed over-night, it reminds me of the autumn tour 2006. This went from Stockholm to the forests in Bergslagen (the mining district in Västmanland since back in the Middle Age). On our tour back from Gallery Astley in Uttersberg to the manor in Kolsva were we should stay over-night with the traditional dinner the road went along smooth bends on boulder-ridges between the furs. I then chased Johan’s Bora (which compared to my Khamsin is a Gr. 1 car) and actually managed to hang on, but went so fast that I did not dare to look down at the speedometer. Afterwards I realised that it had been idiotic to drive at such a speed with this old car without the slightest racing routine, and promised myself to never do it again. If something had gone wrong I would have been helpless and most probably crashed into a tree (in Google map you can see almost every tree I didn’t crash into).

Later in Kolsva I had a look at Georg Helenius (Johan’s father) Jaguar E-Type cab and noticed that he had the main switch in the cabin. For esthetic reasons I had put mine in the engine compartment in front of the battery. Georg said it was safer to have it n the cabin because if you went off the road you just turned it off before you crashed. The electric fuel pumps then stopped and the car did not start burning. But if I would leave the road at high speed I would certainly not remember to turn off a switch. Since there are probably more pleasant ways of dying than burning up I decided it had to be fixed – to every man his due – in an foolproof way.

The remedy consists of inertia-switches of the type used in most cars of today. The one I used is made by Ford and costs about 30 euros. The switch has three connections. One for the electric feed (+) and a second that breaks when you knock the switch. Pressing down the red button restores the connection. This goes to the pump. The switch also has a third pin with the opposite effect, i.e. closes when the switch is knocked. This normally goes to a warning lamp in the dash marked “Fuel cut out” or similar. I did not use this function. The installation takes an hour or so and you don’t even have to modify the car since you use the original bolts. What you need is to cut and bend two thin L-brackets and drill four holes. I cannot imagine a cheaper life and car insurance (besides driving reasonably fast, but that is not so easy with a Khamsin).

    Greetings

    Ulf

Ulf very useful post as we have all driven once or many times beyond our ability (unless we are misguided and think endlessly tinkering on our cars in the garage and never driving them is the purpose of life on earth).

Your post (beyond the fact that it reminds me of childhood summers spent in beautiful Bergslagen in the late 70's) comes at an eerie time as earlier today I was reading an article about rally Finland and how drivers and teams manage the innnumerable jumps at 160 to 190kmh (yes 100 to 120mph on dirt roads in the forest to gain hundredths of a second) and the best quote was by Daniel Elena the co driver of soon to be 7 time world champion Sebastien Loeb: "When you crash into the trees off a jump you hit the high part of the trees which is soft" gulp!

...and to get back on topic I don't know of any Khamsins in Finland.

    best regards,

    Marc

Thanks for that Helge: an unknown one!

It is right hand drive and can also be seen in photo 15 and 17. In the latter it is a perfect chance to see how Gandini started from the Lamborghini Uracco (first car in the photo) to design the Khamsin (third car in the photo) the way the glass is shaped, the hood line...he confirmed this when I interviewed him.

I emailed them let's see if they answer.

    Hi Marc

I have been giving some thought to the Khamsin gathering and I think I will do a local one.

Australia has 15 RHD Khamsins, I am aware of 5 in Sydney, 6 or 7 in Melbourne, 1 in Western Australia 1 in Brisbane. One in restoration some where on the east coast. if I start about now, I recon a bit of publicity asking around lets see what I can arrange.

Would you do it in 2012 as well? Would be very special to have the western Oz car (Perth?) come over to join you all east coasters.

    Hi Marc
I recon 2012 is probably how long it would take.

I dont actually know the person in western Australia with the car but its worth a followup.
getting some one to drive accross would not happen.

its 3942ks from Sydney to Perth and can take up to 3 days according to google its 47hours driving. the roads are a different matter the speedlimit for the most part is 100ks.

Just getting touch with "lost cars" will be fun in its own.
Just having this thread running should find at least one!!

    I will keep you appraised.
    Regards
    Graeme
