How do Maserati and Porsche compare performance wise? It seems there isn't quite a bit out there comparing a 911 and the Coupe.

    Thanks,

Er yeah I posted in the wrong section, and couldn't find the delete, so I changed the thread so I didn't look like too much of an idiot. So much for that! Sorry.

The 911 is a better car and so is the SL... The Maserati will not handle as well as either car and the thrill is more there in the 911. As far as engineering, the 911 is German and is a Porsche, the Maserati is abit overpriced and italian made.
If its not a Ferrari its not really worth the 80-90 grand. Porsche and Mercedes will dominate in sales, for those price ranges. The SL is a sleek, better looking car than the Maserati, while the 911 is sportier, cheaper and probably a better driver's car.

If the Maserati were around 75-85k, then perhaps it would be more considered. but, for the most part, they are bought for the name and principle of having a maserati, and an italian sports car. When you have that, you can call yourself fairly wealthy. Otherwise, the smarter buy is a 911 cabriolet fully loaded, which would reach possibly 100 grand, but would be better value (if you are getting a 911 Carrera S cabrio), because with Porsche options you get exactly what you want... The SL is a good buy too, but they are less exciting unless you drive an AMG, which is going to be above 90 grand.

While there is no arguing that the Porsche 911 is a benchmark for all other sportscars, it suffers from over-exposure! Just stand by any street corner in any large city and they are a dime a dozen. So much for feeling "special" when you get into your car. With the Maserati you have exclusivity in relative terms. You will get people following you into gas stations to ask you about the car. There is the whole aura of Maserati that Porsche can never match. People who don't follow the car market will think it costs 200-250K because of the mystique that surrounds the badge. Think of it as a gentleman's Ferrari and that your not following the "hordes" and purchasing a Porsche

True that the 911 is perhaps better than the Porsche and the SL looks better, but the Maserati is a Maserati and not a Porsche or MB. On my way to school, which is a 5 minute drive I see at least 2 or 3 911's and the same amount of SL's. But I rarely see a Maserati. In addition, the Maserati has a mystique/aura about it.

Now I understand comparing a 911 to a Maserati. That's all based on personal preference. I prefer the Maserati. But bringing Benz into this does not make any sense to me. Mercedes are very boring to drive unlike the Maserati which is more fun then not only the Benz (fact) and 911 (opinion)

Porsche > Maserati except when comparing the names or logos then Maserati wins.

Yesterday I was on a track with 38 Porsches (996, 997, TT, GT3, Boxter-S...), and a BMW/Alpina Z4. Only one italian car, my "old" Maserati 2002 Coupé CC. My car was clearly in the midddle-up range in a perf point of view (maybe the pilot), but on the turn-the-head factor the car was in the 3 first ! Music was probably the most pronounced word about the car (tubi or not to be).
So you can choose a Porsche and own the most produced sport car of the world or take a Maserati and drive a true exclusive car, every day with a large smile on your face :->

From the looks of the two 911TT owners in my neighbourhood when they drive they're cars to work...zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz......you'll quickly realize that the 'wow' factor lasts about as long as those teen age boy bands out there.
And regarding the SL (500 I assume), leave it for your wife.
    LOVE my MASER.

It is at most 75k. No one pays sticker, not even close.

or interiors, or turning heads, or smile factor each morning (probably) or sound with tubi (probably) etc but what do I know I've only had two masers ;)

At the end of the day its all about personal preference and affordability for the individual.

A 997 911S and a Quattroporte were on my short list and I bought the QP. I love it and have no regrets. They're both great cars, & I bought Italian because I needed a change from the German marques. (My last 5 vehicles over the past 4 years have been German). An incredibly massive breath of fresh air. I don't get tired of it.

Great article by Sheehan over at ferraris-online where he points out that until recently (04) the maseratis have been garbage. Anyway I'd go porsche or ferrari and forget maserati.

Go for the Maserati. Had a Boxster S and found nothing special about Porsche and do not miss that car at all. On the other hand I regret everyday getting rid of my Spyder. Have gone thru a few dozen cars over the years and the Maserati is the only one I know I made a mistake with getting rid of to soon

    Go for the Maserati,

much much nicer interior, nicer exterior, more exclusive, italian V8 vs german 6...... , better sound, better wow factor, very good used prices.

its the only credible european alternative...

I believe this thread was unintentional in the first place. He was asking a business question, posted it in here on accident, and could not delete it so edited it to some random topic.

It turned out to be a good thread though! I was actually considering posting this, but it was a little rushed. I was more interested in the opinions.
