Anyone seen any undoctored photos of the upcoming Maserati Spyder (2008/9?) Folding Hardtop. This version was conceived during the days Maserati was under Ferrari's direction.

    D Day.

We may be waiting a while for that photo, since no one has seen an undoctored photo of the coupe yet, and the spyder is supposed to follow "later in the year" of 2007.

even if it were conceived during the days Maserati was under Ferrari's direction, the folding hardtop will have nothing much to do with Ferrari.

pininfarina being one of the expert coachbuilder has designed and built a few convertible tops. chances are this folding top will be designed by pininfarina.

A folding hardtop would be great, except for two other problems.
First, it would add more weight to the car. The current Spyders are pushing 4000lbs. Still a great car, but pretty heavy.
Second, the only thing that seems constant in the SWAG's (Scientific Wild Assed Guesses) about the new Spyder is that is it going to be powered by a V6 Alpha engine. What a waste.

Yeah, don't worry. When they announced the V6 the cry of pain was so loud that they even heard it in Modena. The latest insider news I have are the following:

Coupe / Spyder 4.7 V8, power between 450 and 500HP (may be released in two stages, the 500HP coming for a "Gransport" version later).

Style: front end very similar to the QP. Elegant, rounded lines similar to a rakish QP Coupe, but lower and more aggressive. More rear headroom and legroom than a DB9, so expect the proportions to be more along the lines of the BMW M6 rather than the Aston (i.e. reasonably high roofline over the rear seats). I've only seen a half-covered prototype, but it looks very promising.

I just hope they change the looks of the car, so far the spy photos look like a mini Quattroporte. But I am on the other hand very excited about the new engine.

I think these are just chassis and engine mules, with Quattroporte bodies. Hopefully, the real car will look very different.

I was at the dealer in Mpls the other day when they were talking to their Maserati of NA rep. He had seen the official photo's and said, anything you've seen so far is nothing like what it really looks like, and it looks awesome. He didnt know when they were going to let the public or even their dealers see the pics. But they said, they exist and it looks great!

Sounds exactly like Jim's car, all of the guesses were nothing like what the car actually is...and that ended up turning out pretty well.
