Do you guys know if the 4.2 L Maseratti V8 block is built by Ferrari? Anything different if it is, from a "Ferrari" car with it?
    Thanks.

Some parts interchangeability but lots of differences too.

I believe all the castings and forgings are done by Ferrari. I saw the cranks being made.

All units assembled at Ferrari so on the factory tour the main color in that department is blue not red cam covers

I'm sure full technical details eg compression ratio & power output differences have been posted here before

Blue cam covers for the 4.2 (granturismo), Red cam overs for the 4.7 (granturismo S) ;)

In the Maser, it's not a flat plane crank like the Ferrari. But, it's a wonderful engine. They are definately not the same engine but they have similarities and they are built on the same assembly line.

I've had mine going on 8 years and it still thrills.

BTW the 4.2 and 4.7 are not dry sump as Ferrari's engine but regural oil system lubrification. That makes a huge difference. I believe that ony the basic engine molded structure is identical but that's it. The entire engine equipment is totaly different between Ferrari and Maserati.

The 4.2 in the 4200 coupe series is a dry sump engine.
They went to the wet sump with the later engines as used in the Granturismo.

Correct me if Im wrong, but the masserati 4.2 engine is chain driven vs belts on the 360. I think ferrari test the chains on the cambiocorsa and then use the chains on the 430.

The 4.2 Maserati block is related to the F430 block, not the 360. Both the 4.2 Maser and F430 are chain driven.

But, they are not the same engine.

And, the 4.2 is a dry sump motor as is the F430.
