So, I hear Nick Mason of Pink Floyd is selling his Enzo. http://classicdriver.co.uk/uk/find/4100_results.asp?bsubmit=true&lmodelflag=12266&lmanufacturer=10042&whatbutton.x=0&page=0&lCarID=1838350 Interesting – could it be that Ferrari has started taking early deposits on the next gen Enzo? Also, the car itself is an interesting topic for discussion – famous owner, but it has been put to a good use, to say the least. Mason himself admitted he burnt the first clutch in one thousand miles or so and the car has been trashed by journalists in multiple occasions. I remember recently EVO borrowed the car for a test in France and a journalist ended-up spending a night in the car on a petrol station... Not sure I would want a car like that ☺
Trashed by journalists? I would rather say that is been used for what's it's designed for. Not that I'm in the position to buy one but I would rather buy an Enzo that's been regularly used then a very low mileage one that's rarely been driven.
No, it was trashed by journalists! As I recall the clutch story, Mr Mason was disappointed with what he felt was premature clutch failure and tried to claim for a new clutch to be fitted under warranty. Ferrari rejected the claim as the warranty did not cover "natural wear and tear on a component". Mr Mason stated that clutches should last much longer than a few thousand miles, even on a Ferrari. Ferrari then cited all the road tests that they were aware of in which the car had been used to test the performance of the car to the max every time. I believe Mr Mason relented and paid for the clutch to be replaced. The thing is, everybody who does performance testing on a car does not use it "for what's it's designed for", as you put it, they torture the car to extract the headline grabbing figures for their front covers/ programme intro's. This includes full throttle take off's, one after the other until the clutch starts to slip and burn, in order to get the lowest possible 0~60 time (hence why there was no free clutch replacement from Ferrari); standing on the brakes time after time until they are almost catching fire in order to get the best stopping distance performance; red lining every single gear change in order to get the fastest lap time possible, and don't think for one minute that these testers treat these cars with any mechanical sympathy whatsoever, even if it is Nick Masons car and not a press hack. There's using a car and then there's abusing a car and motoring journalists who do performance testing always fall into the latter category!
I dont recall this particular Enzo ever being used for a road test, i.e to obtain performance data, all the articles I have read where its been used were drive stories and contained no performanec data.
Agreed. Using a car for what it was intended for includes operating it within tolerances and taking care of it along the way.
Ferraris are build to be driven like that, hence the F1 tranny and the carbon brakes. Of course that means frequent clutch changes, like in a racing car.
The F1 tranny when used like that though puts a lot more shock loading through the drive train than the old manual shifters. I'm pretty sure Ferrari didn't design it for 20+ full throttle starts, one after another in quick succession to try and shave a couple of tenths off the 0~60 time. Here's a question for all the Enzo owners on here then: Do you feel wearing the clutch out in 1000 mile (or whatever it was) is the sign of a car that has been used "as it should be", or would you say it's a sign that the car has been abused?
Nick always commented how hard the Enzo was to live with - especially being lhd in the UK. It's very big , has huge blind spots. I believe he has a 599GTO which is as fast and more usable, and of course he'll get an Enzo replacement.
One thing is certain Jeremy Clarkson beat the hell out of that car on Top Gear and afterwards Nick flew away piloting his own helicopter. Makes me think Nick was already displeased with the car and he knows Ferrari will ring him when the replacement is announced or ready for delivery (he probably already has his ordered).
Who the hell cares about an Enzo when you own a Mclaren f1 gtr proto. I don't think he will be getting rit of this thing anytime soon. LOL Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login

Well for one the FXX is not an Enzo and for 2 not street legal. Bot the enzo and fxx are super cars but not Mclaren f1 league also with raced proven history which the fxx and enzo don't and won't have and you won't need 10 ferrari techs starting your car for you to go for a spin. By the way the equivallent for the fxx would be a mclaren f1 gtr long tail to be fair. The Enzo 650hp is street legal so is Nick M"s GTR 600 hp, The fxx is not and has extras for the down force and 800 hps engine so the Longtail has the extra down force kit and a 900 hp engine. and I for one would take the fxx for looks also over the mclaren f1 longtail but not for the nick m gtr. But you like what you like and and I like what I like. LOl
The FXX Evo has 900 CV and in my book the Enzo is the superior hypercar but what really matters is your last statement. Let's just agree that we disagree!
