could this be possible, if so, what a comeback from a guy with the will, determination and love for his sport! As the article mentions it must be remembered that there was a secondary fracture at the base of the skull.........***Note: as with all the stories about Michael it was always "CONDITIONAL" and it is not any different with Felipe.

As unlikely as it may have seemed just a couple of weeks ago, the Formula One rumour mill is already suggesting that Felipe Massa could be poised to make an emotional return to the cockpit in front of Ferrari's loyal tifosi at the Italian Grand Prix.

According to Italy's Corriere dello Sport, the Brazilian's recovery from the head injuries he sustained in qualifying for the Hungarian Grand Prix earlier this month is progressing at a sufficient rate to allow him to contemplate a return before the end of the season, with Monza being pencilled in as the most likely opportunity. Countryman Rubens Barrichello confirmed earlier this week that Massa was in good spirits - and 'exactly the same person as before' - after spending time with him in Brazil during F1's summer break.

While the report claims that Massa has expressed a desire to return as soon as possible, it also urges the need for caution, with the 2008 championship runner-up having to pass all necessary medical checks before being allowed back into the cockpit. With no in-season testing - at least in a 2009-spec machine - for the Brazilian to test his fitness, a lot will rest on both his own judgement and those of the doctors - both physical and neuro experts - tasked with examining him, most likely in Paris early next month.

Grandprix.com reveals that Massa's main fitness problem may not surround the eye or front of skull injuries that made the headlines after Budapest, but a secondary fracture at the base of his skull which, should it receive too vigorous a workout before being fully healed could lead to problems in the future.

Questions may be raised about why Massa wants to return before the end of the 2009 season. There is little on the line for either himself or the Scuderia, given their slow start under the new regulations, and a prolonged period of recuperation could be the key to allowing a more competitive comeback in 2010. However, even though Ferrari appears to be sending out a positive message to its star by not opting for an outsider - not least another young charger - as replacement, Monza is expected to be a pivotal race for next season, with Fernando Alonso and Santander both expected to be confirmed on board for 2010.

Luca Badoer is set to replace Massa in next weekend's European Grand Prix, with Michael Schumacher still being talked about as a possible stand-in at Spa, despite already performing a U-turn on one potential comeback.

    Race drivers are optimists. ;)

I thought maybe for Brazil, a month later. But Monza?

Monza is probably the fastest circuit on this year's calendar, and a tough one on drivers.
That's really jumping into the deep end.

A basil skull fracture is something you have to take seriously.
Especially before sticking a helmet on the head and pulling four to five Gs.
    Even with HANS.

I'm sure he *feels* ready, right now. But some things just aren't worth the risks.
The doctors will likely be the bearers of bad news for a while.

Of course, I haven't seen the x-rays. It might not be all that bad.
But there are huge potential consequences to some kinds of basil fractures.

IMO, nothing to do dwith Schumi whatsoever, but i think Massa should take the year off and prepare for next year. Whats the point in rushing back? He's not in a WDC position, and so are Ferrari.

Indeed. They are even worse than fennel skull fractures.

But not quite as bad as oregano fractures, to say nothing of ginger/nutmeg compound fractures.

I suggest an immediate course of treatment with parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme. Phil should be good as new for Monza.

I totally agree. There is little to gain and much to lose here. The season is lost. What's important now is that he gets back into shape both physically and mentally to take on the fight for next year.

heehee ... ya, I know, spelling comments rate about 200 on the 1 to 10 gayscale--unless you can make really, really bad jokes out of them.

And a spel ckeckr would not underline basil since it is a word. But lawyers are way worse than doctors about spelling. One time a really nasty opposing lawyer said to me "did you show your lawsuit to any other lawyer before filing it?" I said "did you show your motion to dismiss my lawsuit to your 7th grade English teacher before filing it?" No, he hadn't. :p

In target shooting, we say the best way to train for actual matches is to shoot actual matches.

I know even less about F1 than Flavio Briatore, but especially with the testing ban, wouldn't the best preparation for next year include racing this year as much as possible?

Give the guy an A+ for effort and determination. He's like the infantryman that gets his leg blown off and can't wait to get back into action.

Yes, but what if he gets injured again. Breaking normal bones are one thing, but head injuries are two totally different things together.

Right now, Felipe should be preparing to be a dad, and mentally and physically for next season. He should re-charge his batteries, and aim for the best next year, pending on the Scuderia's car of course.

he might beat Alonso, should Fred come over. Who knows :D

This is the best comment! the best thing would be for him to be active with Ferrari again as soon as possible - even if just attending the races being in the garage. The worst thing you can do with as much determination as he has is to sit at home and do nothing - that's when the problems start.

Ferrari Team Principal Stefano Domenicali visited Felipe in Sao Paulo on Sunday and had good news to share: "Felipe is in excellent form and his recovery is going very well!"

There are many people in the world that need to take a lesson from him!

The guy has grit but I agree with most that he should not rush it and maybe come back next season. He really took a shot and the head injury thing is serious. If he has a sore leg that would be another thing.
