Does anyone know if these cars have fire systems and fuel cells?

How could he be hanging out of the car like that? Could the belts failed at some point in the crash?

    that and/or the seat broke.

whole front axle laying on the opposite side of the track, A-pillar bent like a paper clip, driver's door torn off...lots of things went wrong on this one.

WOW! What a horrific crash. One thing you have to give props to NASCAR for, their fire/rescue crews are on the scene within seconds of a crash. I'm surprised at so many of the fire personnel in this video with nothing more than fire extinguishers that look like little garden hoses.

Thoughts and Prayers go out to Giorgio Bartocci for a speedy recovery!

Me too!! Where's the truck with the 3" hose? Those extinguishers look like they're for
the stove in the camping trailer - not for a Lambo inferno at a race track. Thank God
they at least had those, but still.... why no "big guns" sooner?

what is worse than the crash is the emergency response ... or rather the lack of it ...

but i'm glad he made it ...

Bad scene all around. Must be agonizing pain. Surprised he'd be off respirator so quickly - as inhalation burns are a world unto themselves. Let's hope he surprises us further and heals rapidly.

    According to this source . . .
    http://brnonow.com/2010/05/giorgio-bartocci/
"Giorgio Bartocci has a broken leg, broken ribs and 2nd degree burns to 40% of his body but is now off a respirator."

    and . . .

"Mr Bartocci was transported to Italy today in stabilized condition. His family appreciated the medical care he received in Brno."

If you look at the pictures you can see the red tank that looks like an on-board fire suppression tank, but it is ripped out and spinning around on the tarmac.

I cannot believe he survived. I hope he recovers quickly and completely.

Wow, lots of people saying how no one tried to get the driver out of the car. It looks to me like that fire was REALLY hot, you can see people trying to get close enough and then having to back off. It's not like everyone was sauntering around without a care; they were panicked and overwhelmed by the fire, and appear to be desperate to get to him.

    Very unfortunate accident.

Not sure about fuel cells but in one of the images you can clearly see the fire bottle totally detached from the car and flying out on its own. What makes this crash really odd is both the fire and the destruction of the drivers cell. That said it was a really hard impact and 'stuff happens' when you hit that hard. What I did find poor was the quality of marshaling and fire support. As soon as I saw the video I was sure that it was either at a South American or Eastern European track. Not to put anyone specific down but those areas are not known for the best trackside safety support.

Lots of photos here and you can clearly see the bright red fire bottle in a number of the photos:

    I agree with this.

Last weekend there was also a horrible crash at Assen in Holland and one of the cars was also on fire. The marshalls had trouble with the heat of that as well. It's all very easy critiquing sitting comfortably behind the computer, but it's a whole different thing when you're actually there.

I also read in the comments 'at indy the marshalls are so quick' etc etc but people are forgetting that unlike indy, brno has 16 corners (I believe) compared to indy's 2. Also, it happened on a straight, the last corner has a fairly large runoff and rarely large accidents happen there, so the limited resources available are more strategically placed.

IMO the marshalls with the hand held extinguishers did well and all they could. Except for the idiot standing at the pitlane squirting on it. Glad the man in the shirt snatched it and got involved...

It looks to me like he hit in "really bad" spot. I don't know if someone has it from another angle, but it looks like it hit right on that corner directly at the a-pillar/front of the door area. Seems like that could be a weak area?

I hope he makes a fully and speedy recovery.

why were there no tires on that corner? it seems as if the non barricaded corner wall "cut" the car in half.

    :(
