For pet owners this is very important information. Menu Foods is recalling 60 million containers of dog and cat food because of deaths linked to their products. Menu Foods wouldn't directly release the names of the brands, but they sell their dog foods under 46 brands and their cat foods under 37 brands to 17 of the top 20 retailers nationwide. Brands include Iams, Eukanuba and other Proctor & Gamble varieties. Retailers include Walmart, Kroger, Safeway and PetSmart. Symptoms have included vomiting and kidney failure, leading to the deaths of "about 10" cats and dogs.

Most troubling about this story is Menu Foods' initial reluctance to release the information as well as the source of the problem. They have pointed to a new supply source of gluten as the culprit, which they claim to have removed, but it shines a light on the typical lack of oversight in ingredients used by the mass market pet food producers. The pet food industry is teeming with deceptive practices for which there is little or no oversight.

The following links provide some info as a primer into the world of canine nutrition.

I'm bumping this because I know there are a lot of dog and cat owners on the site, and I know a lot of people use these brands of pet food.

It would appear my mother-in-law's cat may have eaten some of the contaminated food. Last week I picked up some Science Diet for her at the vet, which she would mix in periodically. Cat eats it tuesday night, barely moves wednesday and has to be put down thursday after the vet diagnosed organ failure. She was only around nine and I just had her at the vet a few weeks ago for a full check-up for our move to Hawaii.

Go dry. Do it now! Kidney failure is heart rending. Our Springer died from it some time ago (old age). My two dogs are fine. Thankfully!

Here is the site to check what products were recalled as of March 16, 2007.
    http://www.menufoods.com/recall/

Direct link to cat food products that were recalled:

I am relieved that my cats aren't fed any of the recalled brands, but have heard of a couple of people who's pet has unexpectedly died after eating one of these recalled brands. It has to actually be much more then just 10 cats or dogs that have died from eating these recalled pet foods now. Only so many people have reported and been confirmed that the food caused the death of their pet. And, only so many people know about this recall. I can't believe that the provider for these companies would screw up this big.

Any recommendations on food to switch to? We're currently feeding Iams Mini Chunks. How about Newmann's Own Organic?

I like Newman's philosophy, but a lot of stores have stopped carrying his dog food because of claims that dogs won't eat it. I tried some out on my Goldens, just to see, and they were "iffy". And they eat everything. So...We work with 4 excellent kibbles: Nature's Variety, Canidae, Innova and Timberwolf. Timberwolf is entirely organic and costs about 50% more than the others. The others also make canned food if that's what you're accustomed to using, but the recommendation is to mix it with kibble. We feed our dogs a raw diet and vary it between Northwest Naturals and Nature's Variety. Another good brand is Billinghurst's/BARF. You won't find any of these brands on the shelves of PetCo or your grocery store, but if you search their sites you can locate a store near you that does. We encourage people to consider the raw diets for their dogs, since they provide the truest, healthiest diets available. All of this depends upon your individual dog's breed, age, size and so on. Here are a couple useful tools to help do some comparisons:

    http://www.naturapet.com/display.php?d=comp-wiz

    and

    http://www.azmira.com/ComparisonChartDogs.htm

Like with human foods, you want to look for whole, natural ingredients on the labels. There is just too much information to go into here, but if you click some of the links I posted earlier they can help give you an idea of what to look for and what to avoid.

It will be interesting (at least to me) to follow this story. Today they're saying that the wheat gluten was contaminated with rat poison, begging the question "How?"
