Come to the conclusion nothing is going to be easy on this car, 79 gt4. So I've removed the Mc and would think it would be easy to disassemble...ha. took out the circlip and removed the big niut on the other end at that end removed a couple springs. Can't get anything to come out the circlip/rod end. Checking various threads speak of removing a 10mm set bolt. Well on my Mc there are no set screws. The body is smooth except for the line and reservoir holes. Can't give you the numbers on the body as they are indecipherable. So what do I do from here. I won't use force until advised because don't want to do damage, aka $$$$. All this Hassel for a rebuild. Arrgh. Thanks cal

Why not just send it to whitepost for a rebuild? I have not done one in a while but it is pretty cheap.

I checked apple hydraulics and it is $485 for a Mc rebuild that includes sleeving. Days of cheap prices are gone.

Giving it a try on uploading the Mc pic. As usual can see I've started cleaning it. The reverse side has nothing to see. Sorry I tried but says my pic too big and I haven't a clue on how to reduce it. I'll figure this out yet Dario. I know I can email it . [email protected] IF YOU WANT TO GO THAT ROUTE.

My car is a '84 QV but see my post in the other thread above. I had my MC re-sleeved by Apple and they did a fine job. Also, they were the people who knew that there are several sizes of 308 MC seals, and had them all. I actually live near Apple and have used them for several cars over the years. I think they are pretty good and can help you out.

I know this may sound like apples and oranges but my Mercedes 500e MC has a pin that is only accessible once the reservoir is removed. The pin retains the pistons. The pin is not screwed in it simply slides upward and out of the bore and the pistons then come out. Maybe not your problem but worth thinking about.

As for Apply Hydraulics, they are here on Long Island and have a great reputation. A buddy had his QV MC done by them. Nice people and good workmanship. As for the price, I paid that to "Stainless Steel Brakes" (now not doing MCs) over 20 years ago to have mine resleeved.

Success thanks to Andy. Had already removed the reservoir and after reading Andy's suggestion I cleaned out the grunge and looked and behold there was a slot for a screwdriver. Tried it and out it came. Eurkea!!! I have come to the conclusion there is no such thing as continuity in parts used, it was whatever was on hand at the time. Found a little pitting on the bore will attempt to clean and then proceed from there. Did read about a fiat ducato Mc working. Anyone know anything more on that as I looked and found 2 bolt mount vs our 4 bolt mount. Thanks cal

Here is the pic of Cal's MC for reference. It looks identical to that pictured in the WM, but different from others I have seen (including mine) that do not have a bolt on the end.

    Glad you got it out.

Yeah man whatever people get to work on these cars... it's not enough.

I've never experienced the... what's the word... seat of the pants... method of building these cars.

Essentially they are all cars from the '70s since that's when the car was actually designed/made... but I'm spoiled I guess.

The oldest car I've worked on in my life was a '71 Monte Carlo. And in comparison things were just... I don't know manufactured better?

I've put together many suspensions on many different cars from Fords, VW, Chevy, and I've never seen the cacophony of parts thrown at a car before in my life.

Shims that are on one side or the other... different shims on different sides... more shims on the control arms.

I don't know if that means that the frame is so out of true that it needs shims... or the arms are out of true... or BOTH.

But it very much feels like one of those... two guys building a car and one guy says, "Hey this doesn't line up!" and the other guy says, "EH just throw a shim on there it'll be fine!"

Ha ha . Probably so true, pass the vinto. At least we don't find empty coke cans deep in the body recesses. Got to love it.

Reminds me of an old joke. A couple of judges are having a discussion at a Corvette NCRS Concours event. One judge was deducting points because the door hinges were held in by bolts and not machine screws. The other judge was adamant that bolts were correct. An old timer saw them both arguing and came over to see what all the fuss was about. After both judges explained their positions, the old timer laughed at them both. He told them "excuse me for laughing but you see, I worked on the assembly floor at the factory from '57 up through '85, during that time the guys in the parts room never had enough of what we needed. Some days we would get bolts, some days we would get machine screws. "
