I have been looking for a new mattress. Problem: a vast range in price without any substantiated differences. The more expensive models are said to be "more supportive and luxurious" but these are sales terms backed up with no specific figures or studies. And the price range is from $300-$5000!!!

Non of the manufacturers tell me why their 'super coil foam gel' whatever the fark mattresses are any better or any more comfortable than the 'ultra massage water plasma' mattress of another company.

All I am seeing here is a bunch of fluff B/S and crappy marketing going on. What in the world is the deal?

Aside from trying out each one individually, how can I get a damn mattress that I know will be worthwhile? Any suggestions on what and where to get one?

Search the other two mattress threads in OT. They are good.

We have a place here called The Original Mattress Company which makes the things before your eyes. I have had oen for about five years and love it. Cost: less than $300.

I just went to one mattress store, and tried every mattress in my price range. I did get the mattress at the top of my range, but 2 years later, its still holding up as well as the day it was delivered.

Come to think of it, its time for bed.

The last mattress I bought was expensive, and I love it. I notice a difference in every other bed I sleep in. Spend the money, it's worth it. You spend a lot of time in bed.

My uncle in the business says you should never pay more than 60% of what the store is asking for the mattress. We tried his strategy. My wife walked in the store, told them which mattress she wanted and what she'd pay. They said ok, and I got a great mattress at a great price.

Serta makes a 'hotel' grade mattress. Pretty firm, but affordable, and they hold up really well.

This is true of a lot more than mattresses. On pretty much any major purchase the lost art of haggling will save you a lot of money. Furniture, appliances, electronics.....

Just don't let them know you drive a Ferrari! :p

Go to stores, don't pay attention on price first, but just lie down on some. You will feel the difference. Then pick 3 mattresses you like, and check out the price. Then dicide which one you want to buy.
Jimpo is right, as they do take off quite bit from the list price. We got a new mattress 2 months ago, and very happy w/ it. We were originally going for Tempure, but ended up w/ a regular mattress.
