May 1994 = 1995 348 Spider?

If the 10th digit in your VIN number is an "S", then the car was built to meet the 1995 DOT and EPA regulations, no matter when it was actually manufactured. If the 10th digit is an "R", then the car is officially a 1994.

I don't know exactly how it works with Ferrari, whether the date of May 1994 means that the factory assigned a number "on paper" to a car that was ordered and about to be produced, or if it means the manufacturing had begun, or if the construction was completed. My guess would be that they produced a series of 348 Spider chassis's in May 1994, but they didn't actually complete and ship them until much later in the year.

My own 1990 348ts has a production date of December 1990, which seems like it would make it a 1991. But it's VIN designation is for a 1990 ("L").

 

My engine has a stamp on it stating 1995. Take a look at yours.

 

My 348 Spider was stamped Feb 2003 but is a 2004

 

My 1990 348 was made in December of 1990 and it's still a 90 and not a 91.
