Maybe a Dumb Question for the Gamers: Can PS3 play PS2 Games?

    Unfortunately, no. Only the initial batch (the 20, 40, 60, and 80) was backwards compatible.

    Correct, only the earliest PS3s were fully backward compatible with PS2 games.

    HOWEVER, ALL PS3s will play PS1 games. They also have a built in memory card function, as well as an optional smoothing routine which makes the picture less jagged on PS1 games.

    It may not make sense anymore - the older these systems get, the more problems they are developing. Considering you can still buy a new slim PS2, it almost doesn't pay to buy an older PS3.

    The newer PS3's are much smaller than the old lineup.

    See that's just it. I have 7 PS2s and I only play about 4 video games which are all PS2 games. The PS3 is attractive to me as it has a blue ray player. (Even though I agree with Steve that BR has at best three more years left, they studios are making it so to get the bonus features on movies I love... you have to have BR! Damn!)

    So instead of a BR player and one more piece of junk, I thought I could just replace a PS2.
