Has anyone else realized that, even with the obviously worst engine on the grid, the Honda powered McLaren team was not the worst team in the results all three years?

Of course, a lot of that has to do with having Alonso and Button behind the wheels.

Now the STR13 looks to have the reliability down with the Honda power unit, putting down a good amount of laps, maybe even more than what McHonda did combined in 3 years??

I've been reading McLaren forced Honda to design their engine to their size zero body, hence why the engine wasn't reliable.

Toro Rosso has made the car to work around the engine instead, is what I've gathered.

McLaren Renault on the other hand, doesn't look to have a good start to 2018 testing, and looks more like a continuation of the past 3 years.

That ended (size zero concept) in 2016 but agree with everything else. :) IMO, Mclaren and Honda share a 50/50 % of the problem...One is strict and anal retentive in the F1 culture, the other got in at the wrong time (way over its head) from an engineering perspective.....bad relationship at the time. It's good to see them making alot of progress with STR in testing.

    There's an old saying

When you win you win as a team, when you lose you lose as a team

McLaren and Honda were not a team for the last 2 years.

I'm kinda surprised that how bad the team was, Fernando and Jenson were able to put the car in the points as "high" as they did, and weren't dead last, considering all the penalties they were handed.

Boullier has talked about that a bit and said McLaren never dictated to Honda what size the engine needed to be, and Honda people said as much as well. Boullier said they left it up to Honda to build the engine the way they wanted, and then it was up to McLaren to build the chassis around it.

As for the sudden new reliability from the Honda PU, it's not really that sudden. It began in the 2nd half of last season, then the Honda-powered MCL 33 had the highest lap count at the Abu Dhabi test.

Don't go betting all your money on STR to beat McLaren just yet.
