    McLaren banned, Lewis safe

Lewis Hamilton will continue his fight for the 2007 Formula 1 World Championship but his team, McLaren-Mercedes, have been stripped of their points and fined a record $100m for their part in the Ferrari spy scandal, writes Five Live's Maurice Hamilton for TopGear.com.

The FIA World Council, hearing evidence in Paris today, also ruled that McLaren's 2008 car will be closely examined for evidence of input of technical information gleaned from Ferrari. McLaren will appeal.

The decision means that the sport's governing body found enough evidence to prove that McLaren used information leaked from Ferrari and held by Mike Coughlan, McLaren's Chief Designer.

The fine roughly equates to two years' earnings by a top team, based on the championship points scored.

The decision at least allows Hamilton and Fernando Alonso to continue their battle with the Ferrari drivers for the 2007 championship.

Hamilton leads Alonso by three points with Kimi Raikkonen and Felipe Massa a further 15 and 20 points behind.

There are four races remaining, starting with the Belgian Grand Prix this weekend.

Ferrari is getting revenge, studying technical details of the McLaren vehicles. Who's trucks will get to the next race faster now?

Look to be trying to find a nice place to relieve themselves more so than looking the McLaren trucks...

But Ferrari and MasterCard have a new ad..

    Using illegal gearbox .... $50,000.

Possession of stolen Ferrari Documents $100,000,000.

The look on Ron's face..... .... priceless.

Who cares about the contructors championship? ... that is like a concession price for losers.

Ferrari don't as they always reported they had not won for 21 years ... which is the Drivers championship. Basically McLaren won this and Ferrari lost ... if Lewis was not in the McLaren team (put there by Bernie) then McLaren might indeed have lost REAL points.

The TV money is paid to the teams, not the drivers. How do you think they do the math?

Sponsor money is greater than TV money and they care about the WDC ... as that is the number 1 on the car!

Good, as long as McLaren aren't penalized for next year and just closely scrutinized is fine, hopefully the racing just gets better and this stupid soap opera can end.

Another satisfying victory for Ferrari, mount that prize next to the beloved Indy trophy as a proud moment.

But they still got butt hurt on home soil. Their drivers are lost, Todt won't give Brawn one of those famed Euro man kisses them types seem to like to welcome him back to the team. The Mac boys have some good info into the Ferrari way of thinking, car design, set ups. The Mac boys are going to win the WDC , but yuppers Ferrari did win this one.

I have never cared/looked at the drivers standings always far more important to look at the constructors points for me. This team effort and the quality of the cars engineering says more to me than what a driver does. Schumacher wouldn't win a race in a STR-Ferrari.

There is a point in this somewhere huh? It is what it is and things like this happen more often than you think. Perhaps not on the global scale like this has obviously made it but it happens to large and small companies as well as sports!!! Maybe its something you should get over... Not sure which side your on (don't really care) but for Mclaren to have been let go of this charge (which is what im assuming you would have preferred) would have put a huge dent in F1..... Seems like the one that is really butt hurt here, is you!!!!

Just proves that everybody is different :).

When F1 started there wasn't even a constructors championship, that came much later. I've always looked at it this way: The car that takes the driver to the WDC took an impressive team effort, etc. ... that is the best car. To win the constructors championship simply takes 2 reasonable performances ...
