McLaren CEO Martin Whitmarsh says the team is determined to get back on top in next weekend's European Grand Prix after two successive defeats by Ferrari.

Although Lewis Hamilton and McLaren still enjoy comfortable drivers' and constructors' championship leads, Whitmarsh believes simply gathering consistent points will not keep them on top and the team must end Ferrari's run.

"Whilst we left Silverstone satisfied with the points Fernando (Alonso) and Lewis took from the race, the Vodafone McLaren Mercedes team exists to win," he said.

"The team is approaching the race at the Nurburgring looking to win; the motivation is there, as is the performance with Fernando, Lewis, the MP4-22 and the team.

"We had a constructive test in Belgium, as I am sure have the other teams, and we now need to translate that onto the race track.

"We have to raise the bar internally with regards to our performance and continue to ensure that if the win doesn’t happen, then we take the maximum points total possible."

Alonso said that the level of effort that McLaren was currently putting in to catch Ferrari was evident in this week's test.

"We had a positive test at Spa this week, with a lot of dedication from everyone within the team," he said.

"This season is very competitive and we all have to push hard to find more performance from every part of the car, particularly for the Nurburgring.

"It is not a track that depends on a particular part of the car and it is difficult to get the maximum performance here."

    Ermmmm now lets see then..

Well Kimi is great at the Nurburgring, and would have won at least twice if it weren't for his old McLaren giving out on him. He is already on fire, and he topped the charts in the last day of testing at Spa, so I am predicting Kimi's third win in a row next weekend.

All this spying and investigations sure add excitement to the season. Kimi coming back into the fold and winning again. Alonso beating Lewis again and Massa falling behind again. I think Massa is going to be strong late in the season. Mclaren is still ahead and Ferrari is hopeful.

Well dont want to harp on those other threads but does anyone see a co-incidence that Mac have suddenly lost pace, suddenly their cars arent so superior.....perhaps they have come to the end of the 600 pages of magice tricks.....

Last year was similar with Ferrari and Renault. Renault did well until they got to France and Ferrari starting winning again. It's all about the track and how the cars react to them.

One would hope this is the case Like last year .I am trying to think positive with all this spying stuff going .I suppose I am trying to look at good side of the sport and people involved I know this Issue will effect whatever happens now,and people will be arguing for a long time on this. but lets hope the season can be salvaged with some creditabilty to whoever wins..

Did McLaren lose pace or did Ferrari up their game?

I don't see BMW coming any closer to McLaren than they had the previous races.
