A total of 3 longtail road cars were produced - McLaren called them the "F1 GT". The green one was the prototype and it is believed that McLaren still retain possession of that car. A black one went to the Brunei Royal Family and probably remains there today. The third was painted burgundy and went to a collector in Japan who also has one of the LMs and at one time also owned an F1 GTR, and at least two different F1 road cars.

The GTs definitely offer a unique look that doesn't appeal to many, and if not for homologation rules requiring that at least one be built, I doubt there would be any at all.

More than likely the green car you spotted there is XP5, and F1 GT. XP5 was the fifth and final F1 road car prototype and served as the longtime marketing and demonstration sample for McLaren Cars. It was painted in an almost identical shade of green when built and remains that color today. XP5 has been on display there alongside the LM prototype for the past several years. Quite often that pair is accompanied by a longtail GTR wearing the Gulf/Davidoff livery. The GTR that won LeMans in 1995 has also made some rare appearances in that line up.

To my knowledge, the green F1 GT has not been displayed at the McLaren Technology Center in about 2 years. There was talk of McLaren opening a public museum on the edge of the property to display these cars and other pieces of McLaren's history, but so far nothing has materialized.

I'm too late to edit my previous post to include this, but here is a shot of XP5 and the LM prototype on display at the MTC as I described above.

Fantastic Jorge! The Lark car was my first F1 experience at Symbolic in La Jolla. Any idea of chassis number? Thanks so much.

The LARK liveried longtail GTR is chassis #19R. It was the very first longtail F1 GTR that was built by McLaren. It raced once in 1997 wearing that livery at the 1000kms of Suzuka as part of the FIA GT Championship that year finishing in 9th place with a trio of Japanese drivers. Then in reappeared in 1999 in the AJGT series, competing in various events through 2002. It's last known owner lives in Texas and also had possession of a 333SP if I recall correctly.

Thanks Tony - and btw, go ahead and bow all you want, but I just realized there was a seriously poor mistake in the wording of the first sentence of my reply there. It should have read:

"More than likely the green car you spotted there is XP5, and not the F1 GT."

I'd go back and edit to correct what I said, but you know how that goes here... ;)

Great photos you shared. So, were you guys there to retrieve the Stepney documents, or what? :D

It's chassis #047 again, provided by BMW for the comparison test. One of four McLaren F1s they own, the other three being FINA liveried F1 GTRs.

That's actually #028 Greg - photo taken at Symbollic's classics and restoration department in La Jolla, CA. I can't recall if this damage occured during shipping from SVAG, or if it was previously there. I do know someone who works in the paint shop at Symbollic, so I can ask him next time I see him.

WOW. I never knew #028 was bumped? Cheers for the correction. You can understand why I thought it was #042 though.....?
