There's rumors that the VLN is looking to accept Ferrari Challenge and Lamborgini Super Trofeo style cars with a possibility of old GT machinery being allowed to compete too, any chance an old F1 GTR could be raced?

And is there any real reason McLaren won't allow a Longtail to be road converted?

GTR #21R just participated in the Spa 6-Hours - Trans-Atlantic Prototype Challenge held September 23-25. Some of the better photos from the event are below. This video is pretty excellent too. Ralf Kelleners gets a poor start from pole but seems to have found his groove by lap three in the on-board stuff at the end of the clip:

As time goes on I am sure we will see more and more opportunities for brave owners to unleash their F1 GTRs back onto the great tracks around the world. Time marches on and history will repeat itself with historic racing for these cars as well.

I don't know that "won't" is the proper term. I think McLaren have probably done a proper feasibility study on it (assuming someone really asked) and determined that too much would need to be changed in order to make them road worthy, while at the same time compromising them for their originally intended purpose of racing. I suspect if there was a customer who wanted it bad enough, and if it were possible, then Lanzante Motorsports in the UK who look after several of the GTRs (including this one) would have stepped up to do it already.

Just look at how low this nose is to the ground here - where could you possibly hope to drive it besides a proper racing circuit?

No doubt the same sort of deal that goes into making a 95/96 F1 GTR road legal would be performed on the 97 GTR? Raise the ride height, possibly install a nose lifter for kerbs, etc etc etc but I guess we won't really know until a proper answer is found I guess. Thanks for the info anyway Peloton!

The short tailed GTRs were usually run a little higher off the ground. Obviously the nose of the longtail can be raised enough to get it over most things as there were longtail road cars built, however, it's not entirely clear what bits exist that are different between the two and whether simply cranking up the nose of a GTR could provide the same result. It is a proper question for the experts if that is your plan and so far my understanding is that the official answer has been 'no'. Perhaps the answer could be swayed by large piles of money? :D

I actually suspect that as opportunities to use the cars begin to open up again we may see a bigger rush to convert them back for racing use rather than seeing more GTRs going the other way. Maybe there's a happy middle ground too - GTR #12R has seen quite a bit of both over the years.

It would take someone who is amazingly talented to pull that off. I do have this though. :)

Just search for it on the storefront on Forza, just searching for F1 GTR liveries usually finds it.

I have a GTR in FM3 with the Lark livery from 19R. Downloaded it from storefront, didn't make it myself.

I don't know if anyone makes the rules here. You might get more interest posting them in the Collectibles forum but they'd be fine here.

Actually his exhaust is modified. McLaren offer two louder options for the F1s exhaust as well as a straight pipe option for any certified loonies - somewhat appropriate for the GTRs. This car has the loudest version of the muffled exhaust known internally as the Goodwood pack I believe.

It's chassis #040 - one of just 5 F1s that were fitted with the high mirrors. We've discussed it here previously, but not since its most recent refit where the owner chose a deep dark blue paint. I think it looks fantastic.

Thanks for the clarification, I wasn't certain I was correct on the exhaust but it's definitely not supercharged (just a bit of transmission whine).

Were those videos posted filmed before or after the crash? It looked to have a darker blue than before.

I'm sure you expected this followup question then...care to post some recent pics in it's current state? And that is chassis 20 correct?

He had those wheels custom made in the style of the originals but in sizes that allow him to run the OEM 19" Bridgestones from the Ferrari Enzo. He has another set of wheels in similar sizes that are still in the design phase, yet to be manufactured.

The current steering wheel is one of a few that he has tried. I believe this one is borrowed from the Porsche 911 GT2 (993 version). It might be a temporary solution.

He also has a set of carbon/carbon brakes that are ready to go on the car shortly.
