"The difference between a really fast car and a McLaren F1." This is a cool video McLaren F1 vs. Skyline on Top Gear. McLaren F1 vs. Skyline Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Definitely puts things in perspective... Brace yourself, because pretty soon someone is going to come on here yelling that the Skyline was stock & with X-Y-Z mods it would have "raped" the M.
Don't really care much for Skyline (although I do respect it for its tuning capabilities), but a stock R33 Skyline isn't really that special. There was another Japanese video of a McLaren F1 racing a done up Supra and the Supra just got murdered.
That would just be dumb to say, obviously I am sure a heavily modded skyline might be faster then the Mclaren, but what would you rather have? I think almost everyone would take the Mclaren. Agreed.
Two things come to mind... 1) Why does Clarkson always do that idiotic speech thing where he pauses toward the end of the sentence and places strange emphasis on the last word or two? Eg "What's the difference between a reall fast car...............and a McLaren eff wooooooooon" It's maybe an interesting speech tool but you don't use it in every other sentence. I like Pizza but I dont want to live on it. 2) Ahhahaha the Skyline. Much like dead musicians get elevated to god-like status upon death, the Skyline has been elevated to similar status because it's not available in the USA. I hear stories of how 1,000hp+ Skylines are "easy" in Japan and you'd think they are on every street corner, and that the stock Skyline has 800hp even though it's rated 275 or whatever. However, any time I've actually seen the performance stats on them, I'm unimpressed. I wonder if unavailable-USA cars have similar status bestowed upon them in Japan?
It seems all the Japanese cars are just a little quicker then the competition in the Best Motoring videos.
The RB25DET has been reported to pump out upwards of 300 horses from the factory, but up until a couple years ago no manufacturer listed above 280. Ford an dem did the same thing in their big block engines back in the day of the muscle cars. While a stock R33 skyline isn't much, a GTR (what was in the video, I believe) is pretty much the japanese form of the Porsche 993 or BMW M3. It's no supercar by any means, but if it were there'd be no point to the video.
Huh? The skyline is a mid-high 13-second car. It gets toasted by LOTS of cars. Including Corvettes, Vipers, GT-40's, Ferrari 550's, 557's, 360's, 355's, 430's, coupes and sedands like the SL55, SL600, S600, S55, E55, M3, M5 and cheap muscle cars like the Firebird, Camaro and Cobra. The list goes on and on and on. I think an Evo or STi may even be able to spank the Skyline. I remember reading a road test of the various Skyline models - this was the mystical uber-car from Japan. I was floored at how slow it was (stock). Of course it can be modded, but so can anything. Stock, the car's a pretty quick runner but it's outclassed by todays sports cars and was outclassed by the last generation of sports cars too.
excelent race [skyline driver]i had him by a length at the dig [/skyline driver] never mind the part where he lost by 20+ lengths
Of course anything can be modded, but unlike most engines the RB series needs few if any internal changes to handle much larger turbos, sort of similar to the 2JZ of the supra. Because of that performance gains are quite substantial for very unsubstantial money, letting people achieve 4,5, and 600 horsepower with essentially bolt-on modifications. Just fyi.
I agree. Anything can be modded, but it just so happens that Skylines can be modded to be faster. The Skyline is noticeably faster than Supra at a top tune. In North America there is really only one modern car that rivals the Supra in power production - the Viper.
If you are trying to argue that anything aside from the most ridiculously modded Vette (ie: not LS1/LS2/LS6/LS7) could compete with the top power producing Skylines... My main point is that the RB26DETT has extremely high limits. The LS series of engines, being aluminum, can not match those limits. I love Vettes, I'd rather have a C6 Z06 over any Skyline. But to not see the extremely potent package that the Skyline can be made into, well that'd just be stupid.
The Skyline is a ricer's wet dream. But perhaps you've driven these cars you discuss. Tell us more. I'd love more first hand feedback.
I'm sure there is a point to this remark. I didn't realize I had to drive a car in order to understand the power production capabilities of an engine.
Driving helps. There's more to than power, but I'm sure you read that in a book already. By the way, really curious--what is your automotive engineering background? You seem to have a lot of knowledge.
