This is F1 not soccer. Many sponsorships in this sport are technically based.

Although some of the equipment would have otherwise been an out of pocket expense...I.e., real cash which they can now spend elsewhere.

Again, I didn't say it was nothing. It has value. But McLaren needs cash now because Honda used to supply them with money, tech support, free engines, and 1/2 of both driver's salaries.

A "tech deal" doesn't come close to covering those costs.

McLaren set to announce Petrobras deal

McLaren is set to announce a sponsorship deal with Petrobras, the state-linked Brazilian oil multinational.

According to Grande Premio publication, the deal will be announced on Tuesday but will only actually begin next season -- in 2019.

And "The agreement will not involve the hiring of a national (Brazilian) driver", said the report.

Grande Premio said former Williams backer Petrobras will be McLaren's fuel and oil supplier from 2019. Last year, the Woking team switched from Mobil to BP-Castrol lubricants.

The report said McLaren and Petrobras engineers will "work together throughout 2018 to develop fuels for next season".

BP-Castrol also supplies lubricants to Renault, who is McLaren's brand new customer engine supplier for 2018.

Hmmm so The Mayor assured us McLaren is screwed and has no sponsors and now they have announced Dell, CNBC, Airgain, Kimoa and Petrobras.

So much for that. I'm betting many were attracted by the fact that they have a competitive engine in the car now. Just more evidence that switching to Renault was a great move.

If it happens I stand corrected.

But my point was that by dropping the Honda deal, McLaren needs to come up with sponsors that would equal paying for 1/2 of their driver salaries AND for the free engines and technical support Honda gave them

And that's just to break even.
BTW: I said the Dell deal was good for McLaren and the sport.

As to the "competitive engine" -- even RB is saying now it's worried.

And CNBC? Don't make me laugh!

No, they have given up looking for one.

They are gambling that some early season success will get them one.

I would bet that McLaren has one of the biggest payrolls and expenses in F1. Not the biggest but pretty darn big.

Kimoa probably only sponsors McLaren. That is Alonso's clothing company. ;)

I don't think Zak has given up on A major sponsor. He is still looking for one or looking for several to make up for one. They're gonna have to take 2018 in the chin until something comes up.

I woulld have to agree. Alonso's salary alone is up there with Hamilton's and Vettel's....3rd largest on the grid I believe.

I saw Grand Prix Driver last night, it was very telling documentary. I recall Zak saying a major sponsor was worth $100 Million a year. That would be double + the $90 Million a year budget that they currently run the team on.

I hope they find a sponsor soon. Someone needs to take out Mercedes. If Ferrari can't get the job done, I'll settle with Mclaren.

you have no idea what deal McLaren had with Honda as far as paying anything.

McLaren WILL be on the podium this year at least once. Bank on it.

Wrong, the increase in prize money alone for ditching that engine will make up for it. Dell is also a huge name to bring in and they've hinted they're not done yet.

They have the best driver in the grid, a competitive engine in the back of the car, and new sponsors. Road car divison killing it. Future is bright at McLaren.

This thread is a lot of wishful thinking. Leaving Honda was a very, very smart move.

Well, we do know in the contract that Honda gave McLaren engines and support for free and that it paid 1/2 of the driver's salaray.

What are you claiming? That Honda didn't support McLaren any more than Renault is now? Really?

The Honda deal was a great deal. We all said so 5 years ago. For McLaren to dump a 10 year exclusive deal in the 3rd year to keep Honda seems crazy.

I really don't care if McLaren is or is not on the podium. Lance Stroll was on the podium. Then the next race he qualified 17th.
