?? F1 wheel size is to limit brake size by regulation. Much bigger wheels with bigger brakes and lower profile tires would be a LOT faster.

Reducing aspect ratio of tires by reducing side wall height is very benificial as it reduces flex and allows bigger brakes. Side wall flex reduces tires grip.

Ceramics are not allowed in most racing. For track days they're a bad idea. If you go into the grit and a stone hits a rotor it's toast and damage on a Ferrari can easily be 40K as an Fchatter recently found out. Steel brakes are a much better idea for a track day car.

Why did they put a 360 Modena front bumper on it?

I really dislike the nose of the 918 - probably more than I disliked the one on the CGT. The back half of both cars are great though - especially the 918 with those rear mounted cannons for the exhaust coming out of the rear deck.

The front of the 918 is a bit like the 360s.

The P1 is really a wonderful looking car. The lines and the detail--I can't wait to see it in person.

Didn't the F1 come with it's own tool box and a huge torque wrench about 4 or 5 feet long? In my CGT the large hub socket is under the front hood, but I never looked at the wrench. Wonder if it's a torque wrench? The center locking nuts vary in color from one side to the other on the CGT. Thank god as I can mix them up when I pit!

The factory rep told me center locks will likely be available if desired.

The p1 is not a dressed up 12c. Power plant is entirely different. The tub is now a cage. All panels are carbon fiber. Active and passive aero. This is bleeding edge street car technology. Also it is completely bespoke. Each buyer works with factory to spec every detail. You want full naked carbon, you got it.

I do empathize with an earlier post that exotics are not rational. Cheaper race cars are better on the track and you can't drive an exotic at the limit on the street.

    But they are cool! :D

Impressive how much testing Porsche and McLaren are doing.

Jim: I see a lot of information regarding Porsche's testing regime but only bits regarding P1 testing. Can you shed any light on McLaren's track testing effort?

Unfortunately that is the same drill with my CGT. 4' torque wrench and a 100 lbs of force. In a P1 bespoke order I would probably still purchase the centerlocks with probably steel brakes if possible.

There are several cars running around in camo but in production form. They are also track testing in Spain. With cars as complicated as the F70/P1/918 I think testing on real roads in production form is very important.

I take it that thing is not made of titanium? ;)

    That is a serious wrench!

Only the tools in the on-board tool kit are titanium.

That socket was a hefty piece for sure. I didn't pick up the torque wrench, but I'd imagine it could do some damage. Pretty sure it is a 1" drive on the head.

Would have been a nice photo op to get pictures of the bottom CF panels, aero flaps and rear diffuser.

Nice to see them together. IMO, the reporters were rather rude to the McLaren rep.

    Thanks for sharing.

(It always bugs me when people lean on cars. Why do they do that?)

(And yes, I know one of them is Jay Leno. That doesn't excuse it.)

There's some really nice details on this car. But, I still can't figure out what the scoop/dome is for on the top. It doesn't appear to be a snorkel for the engine unless it's in the inside.
