Batteries are 96 kgs/211 lbs. I saw a figure for the electric motor in the range of 20 lbs, but can't find the quote at this second. >8^) ER
Erik, I was just looking through your Flikr photos (great, btw) and noticed "McLaren" etched into the tread...I assume this is for the show car and not something that can/will make it to production??? Sorry if it's already been covered, I haven't kept up on the P1.
Yes - they are for show only. This quote from an earlier press release references them as a one-off design, but leads one to believe that Pirelli will continue to supply tires on the P1 as they do already in an exclusive arrangement for the 12C. >8^) ER
It sure does seem to be a monster battery pack. 96kg as quoted elsewhere. Plus the electric motor and associated plumbing. Well over 120kg total. Unfortunately, taking all this out is not possible - the electric motor is integral and built into the engine casting itself... It looks very complicated to drive. Apart from dealing with the fact that you will be travelling at warp speed, you will also have to get your head around how and when to use the DRS button and the IPAS (KERS) button. I can see many of these gadgets being used only very rarely, and I can also see many pics to come of spectacularly bent and shattered carbon fibre...
I'm disappointed that Ron Dennis introduces the P1 at Geneva with an explanation about how the car is collectible, exclusive, and will retain its value like the F1. As if the car isn't about performance, technology, or engineering. The rumors about them having trouble selling all 375 seem more believable now. The market thinks its a souped up version of the MP4. But I think when potential LaFerrari buyers realize they did not make the allocation cut Then McLaren will get a huge bump in sales from those that were not allowed to buy the LaFerrari.
^"“If you want one you have to apply and we assess you on your relationship currently with McLaren but also what you own already in terms of supercars,” says Bruce." This marketing talk is nonsense. Build a proper car and sell it. Leave the talk to the Italians.
Yeah they would have followed Ferrari's lead and built 799. Not every lead is serious and not every customer will follow through with a deposit. They are building a reasonable amount and are sticking to the original plan of building no more than 500. I know a lot of people heard 'We will build 500', but that isn't what McLaren originally said. I was there in Paris when the cover came off the car and heard the words myself. As a new entry to the market McLaren doesn't quite have that line out the door that other brands have just waiting for their product to drop, so the ability to judge the market and set a final target for production could only happen after they had shown the car. >8^) ER

Millionaires may not be "worthy" but they are the only ones with the cash. I kinda wonder why they would put out something like this. Seems like they are dissing the people they need to sell to. I don't know too many average Joes who can plunk down 1.3 million on a hyper car, no matter how badly they may want one.
This might be a dumb question and probably my ignorance will show but .... ¿ Is the engine a Mc Laren product or out sourced like in the old F1 ?
Yes company called Ricardo make engines for McLaren Ricardo announces key milestone in McLaren M838T engine production - Ricardo
Thank you !!! If I recall correctly RICARDO had built the Bugatti Veyron transmission as well Serious company they must be Still I wonder if the 3.8 engine was used in some other car before
No, McLaren's V8 is not shared with any other car, but McLaren initially started down the path of developing their engine with an design that had its origins with Nissan's racing department. >8^) ER
