McLaren releases montage of MP4-12C lapping 'Ring in 7 min, 28 sec

    Not sure I'd release that with the ZR1 (7:19.xx) and Viper ACR (7:12.xx) both going faster this year. I suspect there is more performance potential in the 12C but 7:28 does not knock my socks off.

    Or just put up a "street-derived" number, 599XX-style, in an MP4-12C GT3 and be done w/it?

    With GT3 restriction it wouldn't be a lot faster.

    We just ran a 7:15 under the following conditions:

    70 KG of ballast.
    HP restricted to about 470.
    Traffic.
    Street registered.
    Tires not.
    Dry with wet sections.

    We have a lot of development in the works and hope to be a bit faster next year.

    Stunning car Napolis!!,guys you must not forget this lap of 7:28.00 was in slighty damp conditions,by HVS,he had a 12 minute window and it was the first time in the car and the 3rd fastest lap he had ever done in a production car,only being quicker in a GT2rs and a Gumpert.
    Dont forget he is also a 911 specialist as he races them,so if you put all that into context it was a stunning lap.
    Given time and the right conditions you have to admit its got alot more in it.Given your knowledge Napolis and this information ,what would you assume is possible???

    The truth is that if you want a very low ring time it's a serious undertaking. You need to rent the track so there's no traffic. You need good weather as even on sunny days the track takes a long time to become fully dry under the trees which line the circuit. You have to set the car up for a hot lap including using shaved tires (If you want street legal bragging rights) You need a Ring Master who's also had a lot of experience with the car.

    We figure that without HP restriction and 70KG's of ballast with no traffic, a dry track, but with shaved PS Cup's (We'd then be fully street legal) we'd break 7 minutes but it's hard to say how much lower they can go in a MP4-12C. The GT3 really won't be a fair comparison as that's a lot different from a street MP4-12C. We'll race against the MP4-12C GT3's next year and I look forward to seeing how fast they are.

    Thanks for your input,im rightly or wrongly assuming that if time and effort are put in, a factory time could be within a couple of seconds of the gt2rs as this seems to be were the car is placed on other tests.Obviously factory times are PR based and bare no relation to reality for the ordinary driver.
    I look forward to your unbiased opinion of the 12cgt3 next year,as you know they have just been doing a shake down this season,and good luck to yourself,i will be watching with interest

    Awesome - congrats! Traffic and wet sections put that rascal in a different zip code than a focused effort to hit a #, of course. Well done.

    Might take still another team of dedicated engineers to develop a coolness meter to accommodate the license plate, btw ...
