FIA confirmed today that McLaren attorneys approached them about potential "issues" (read: cheating) with Renault's F1 package (apparently reason Renault is winning races this year).

Speculation is that McLaren's defense Thursday will suggest if they are to be punished so should other teams (admission of guilt?). It is also believed that other teams in addition to Renault were mentioned to the FIA.

The FIA's response is that any wrong doing by any team will be a completely separate query from Thrusday's proceedings.

Flavio's response is he has no problem with any investigation.

That's just Ron Dennis' payback for loosing Alonso to Renault.

Remember it was Flavio who supported Ferrari in the first trial and now allegedly Alonso's manager leaked the emails to the FIA so Alonso gets out of the McLaren contract for free.

And clearly the Renaults must be cheating. After all they're dominating the field right now...nott.

Guys come on :) Somebody have to be able to see what's behind.
As a mind excercise - try to think and come up with explanation why McLaren did it. I want to see a grown-up analisys, not a 3rd grade name calling.

My Theory Below [scroll down, but try to think first]

This is have to do with Benetton days and people going from Benetton to Ferrari. Probably it's a probe that some of Benetton documents ended up in Ferrari. McLaren wants to turn Ferrari's game around. If anything is found - McLaren will use it as "case law" - since the trial is for McLaren and not Ferrari - they can't immediately cause damage Ferrari, but only use whatever found to defend themself.
Remember - earlier Briatore said that he will be in Paris for the hearing.

Hmmm... I am not so sure. Ron makes a lot of money off F1, and even if his team is sanctioned/penalized, he will still make a lot of money from F1. I think he has a disincentive to cause it to implode to any extent. I tend to think Ron is feeling singled out and if he "exposes" dirty secrets of other teams, the FIA would have to penalize them the same, lest a bias be clearly exposed. And if a bias were exposed, then Ron wins. If they penalize Renault also, then Ron wins also because the blame is shared now and also because it becomes clear the FIA would rather stab itself and F1 in the gut than try to handle things sensibly - like Indy 2005 all over again.

Thursday will be very interesting indeed!

The FIA has already told McLaren this is only about them...

By Jonathan Noble Tuesday, September 11th 2007, 13:54 GMT

The FIA has confirmed that it has been approached by McLaren with questions about rivals Renault, just days before the World Motor Sport Council hearing into Formula One's spy saga.

There has been mounting speculation since the Italian Grand Prix that part of McLaren's defence arguments in Thursday's hearing will revolve around the fact that if they are punished then rival teams like Renault should be as well.

Sources have also suggested to autosport.com that other teams may also have been mentioned as well as Renault, although this has not been confirmed.

The exact nature of McLaren's query about Renault is not known, but there are rumours it is focused around a technical element on the car rather than any specific involvement in the spy controversy.

The FIA has now confirmed that McLaren's lawyers have indeed been in touch with them to discuss the Renault matter, but the sport's governing body has made it clear that it will have no relevance to the Paris hearing.

An FIA spokesman told autosport.com: "We have noted the speculation and we can confirm that McLaren lawyers have recently brought to our attention certain matters regarding Renault F1.

"But we can also confirm that the team (Renault) does not form any part of our investigations into McLaren's alleged breach of Article 151C of the International Sporting Code.

"The FIA has reminded McLaren that the World Council hearing in Paris on Thursday will focus solely on the new evidence in that investigation.

"To the extent required, any other matters will be dealt with as part of an entirely separate process. Renault F1 are aware of this and are happy to cooperate fully."

Renault boss Flavio Briatore was quoted in the Italian media today as saying that he was confident they would not get dragged into the spy case on the back of the speculation about McLaren's complaints.

"We told the FIA what we had, so there's no problem," he told Gazzetta dello Sport. "I don't know what Dennis refers to, he's throwing stones a bit everywhere. We are calm, no problem at all."

The FIA hearing in Paris will hear new evidence in the McLaren case, believed to revolve around an email exchange between Fernando Alonso and Pedro de la Rosa, with rivals Ferrari also expected to present their own submissions about the matter.

McLaren have been advised on legal grounds not to comment about the case before the hearing.

Ron Dennis is trying to be a snitch, he know his team is going down so he's trying to throw the blame some where else in desperation. He was lucky to escape the first trial, and he knows that this trial is going to be negative in some way to his team. His defense right now is that others(Renault) have done it and that they haven't gotten in trouble so why should he. The man is desperate.

Yea, This is a train wreck - non the less exiting to watch ;)
I think Ron's plan to use Renault (Flav) as a witness and point on some documents making way to Ferrari from Benetton. McLaren & Ferrari baned from 2007 & 2008, BMW wins, Renault takes second. :)

    Bingo.

And as I have said until I am blue in the face what McLaren did or have been accused of doing happens every single day in F1, and in any form of motorsport ... thus why shouldn't RD use as his defense that this is the norm in this sport?

Ferrari only became fast again because they stole Benetton's expensive knowledge ... otherwise they would never have won again. There are 2 ways of doing this, poach the employees or steal the knowledge, and again this happens all the friggin time.

Again Ferrari should work harder on their security and shut the fnck up! ... 'cause I'll be the first to piss myself laughing when they have their 2000 WDC removed, etc.
    Pete
ps: This process, started by Ferrari, caused by Ferrari trusting an English person (who the heck does that? :D) will be the end of F1!!!! ... good one Ferrari. There for the very first race (though in reality Enzo stole technology and engineers from Alfa Romeo) and made sure they caused the end of it! ... Brilliant, not!

I bet Flavio is glad he let Alonso out of his contract early so that Alonso could get a head start testing with the McLaren team....
