Wisely De Ferran has already prepared himself an exit in case his job at McLaren doesn't last.

[f1i.com] Brown: If F1 not "financially viable," Mclaren could quit.

    Brown waiting for 2021 regs.

Is Brown already putting down markers that McLaren is looking for an exit from F1?

F1 is a two-tier field now, divided between factory and customer teams.
McLaren's status dropped considerably when they parted company with Honda after an uneasy alliance.
"The Mayor" has been right all along on that! I couldn't see it at the time.
Maybe the management at McLaren will prefer to quit rather than suffer a long agony like Williams.
Their road car business is doing OK by the look of it.

It used to be my favorite team during the Lauda, Prost, Senna era, and I saw it desintegrate in the last 10 years. .
Ron Dennis paid a high price for wanting to launch a road car division when the team was in fact Mercedes factory team.
It cost him his job in the end, and precipitated the team's decline.

Starting a supercars business, getting a shady tobacco/non-tobacco sponsorship, threatening to leave F1, who do they think they are?

McLaren isn't McLaren without Ron Dennis. Like Williams being a shell of itself without Frank Williams and Patrick Head.

But they'll be back thanks to Andreas Seidl. He starts May 1, 2019 which means they should be in a good position for the 2021 rule change.

Thanks, I was looking for that name everywhere !!!

Will McLaren F1 still be around in 2021 though ...

In any case they will still be a Customer team, so fighting midfield at best.

They'll be around given the Bahraini backing and Zak is still able to pull in the sponsors. Seidl wouldn't have signed without knowing the budget would be competitive, even if not at quite the same level as Merc/Ferrari. Success and failure also carry their own momentum; once they start improving they'll get more prize and sponsor money. The 2021 budget cap which seems to be shaping up should further increase their relative competitive advantage.

The customer team aspect stuck out to me as well, but if RB as a Renault customer had the same power level as Ferrari and Merc, they could've been championship contenders the past few years.

It all rests on Seidl and Renault.

I hear what you say, but a Customer team starts at a disadvantage compared to its supplier
Red Bull's few wins were mostly before Renault rebuilt its factory team after Lotus purchase.
I cannot see Renault allowing a Customer team like McLaren to beat the factory team. (same for Ferrari and Mercedes, BTW)
    We will see.

Alonso, Mclaren's "advisor", will test the MCL34 Tuesday during the Pirelli tire test at Bahrain.

Don't look now but that's two pretty good qualifying sessions in two races. And this Lando kid looks like the real deal to me - I'm impressed.

Great result for Lando! A bummer about Sainz. I'm not convinced Max had that corner. Oh well..

McLaren has already passed their low point and for Renault it seems that McLaren is the new Red Bull. They should be worried.

Impressed that Sainz clearly had the pace to take the red bull today. Good to see them marching up the grid. Their drivers are also very handy which is a big bonus. Well done.

    Who’s missing Honda now??!
