    I know what I saw.

    I know my airplanes.

Today at 14:56 (PST) over Folsom, California, one Me-262 with a prop warbird chase plane taking a SE flight direction. I couldn't make out the prop, but I know it definitely was not a P-51. Definitely had a jet engine whine like I've never heard before.

Has anyone else seen one of these birds buzzing around?

Thats the Collings 262 that Sanders Acft at Ione has been hammering on for 5 years. One of the new kit planes that came out of Switches neighborhood in Seattle and had to be almost completly re-engineered. Pix with Collings dual control 51 c that John Muzalla built new in Idaho Falls. On their way to the Marysville fly in.

Wow, incredible! I would think the engines are centrifugal and not axial flow and that's why it sounded different. The T-33 had a centrifugal flow engine and it had a different sound than more modern engines.

Momos are Lear Jet type. Lozza thrust and way lighter than the originals. This is a dual control airplane and Collings will be selling back seat time. Be sortta fun.

I don't know of any centrifugal engines in use now days. They do sound different from the axial flow. I saw the P-80 take off when I was at Langley Field and it sounded like a whining blow torch. It took all of the runway to get off, too. The engines in the ME 262 replicas are encased in a cast aluminum can to simulate the weight of the old Jumos. Have to keep the weight and balance.

I was fortunate enough to get a private tour of the collection of the owner (family) that this jet belongs to. The owner has a collection of planes and cars..quite incredible.

The aircraft in the background of this pic was Howard Hughes personal B-something-or-other (I'm sure someone on here can tell me, I can't remember the exact model)

And somewhere on the wall of this pic, behind the 300SL, is a pic (looked like an original...nothing you'll see in any books or magazines) of SR-71s (or A-12s.honestly, I can't tell the diff looking at them) flying in formation, signed by the pilots. That one gave me goosebumps.

The more knowledgeable people here would have had a field day at this property.

I will be there around 11am tomorrow. Hope to see this plane, as well as all the other cool stuff there. It will be my first time flying into a temporary control tower situation...hope the airspace is not too crowded. Getting a little nervous.

    That's quite a collection!

The aircraft in question is a Douglas B-23 Dragon, and I'm pretty certain that Hughes did own one.

The big hanger full of toys is indeed Sanders Aircraft at Ione, ca. They specialize in resto of Hawker Sea Furys, but also will tackle any other project such as the 262. Have a 4360 Sea Fury, Dreadnaught, that they polish pylons at Reno with. Another with a 2800, Argonaught, that is a little more user friendly. They were part of the Chino warbird bunch that got out of So Cal about 20 years ago. Great family. The B-23 did indeed belong to Howard Hughes. It has been sold to a Museum in San Diego and will be restored shortly. Nice black 575 Alex.
