    Fri Dec 21, 2007 10:18am EST

    By Peter Griffiths

LONDON (Reuters) - Reading in dim light won't damage your eyes, you don't need eight glasses of water a day to stay healthy and shaving your legs won't make the hair grow back faster.

These well-worn theories are among seven "medical myths" exposed in a paper published Friday in the British Medical Journal, which traditionally carries light-hearted features in its Christmas edition. Two U.S. researchers took seven common beliefs and searched the archives for evidence to support them...

I've long heard the amount of water you need depends on your body. Some need less, some need more.

You 'll take his word for it? Ask Stewie!

Actually, we docs make up the 8 glasses of water thing because nobody can do it.

That way we can blame any problem on the patient and their poor compliance with medical advice.

One I liked was the "Only use 10% of your brain" - next time I hear that said I'll have to bust out, "well, maybe *you* only do, but..."

There are other myths of course, like being celibate or giving up alcohol helps you live longer. In truth you live the same amount of time, but existence is just so miserable that it seems tp take longer for your life to end.

I typically drink a gallon of water a day. Do I NEED to? Maybe not, but I know I generally feel better when I do.

All three depend on the person.

Fat people need a lot more water than thin people, reading in dim light strains the eyes {which doesn't cause problems} but there are environments which do hurt eyes and having them strained worsens the effect and on a woman's legs, maybe the hair doesn't grow back faster but shaving where you have thin hair can make coarse hair grow in its place.

Maybe you don't know but coffee and pop is mostly water. :()

Also for every cup of coffee or pop you should drink a cup of water since they are diuretics.

That's a lot of water and unless you have health reasons for it, I suggest cutting down, your body have to work to use the water and like any machine, it will wear out.
