Good review, it certainly puts some dents on Godzilla's seemingly imperviable armor. When electronic nannies are helping you go faster around the track, drivers won't feel as rewarded driving the car. Still, I think this is the way of the future and we are going to see supercars with more and more electronics such as the Manettino on the newer breed of F cars. I think we can all agree that a manual transmission with clutch and all is more fun, more involving, and more rewarding to drive than F1 style gearbox. We don't see too many exotic cars sold with standard manual gearbox anymore.
yea; he makes mention of that in the early part of the article, here: but he then goes on to again, incorrectly reference the Yamato.
That's pretty amazing. I hate that it only looks good in black, though. I guess this means the cocky Porsche owners who have memorized the Nordschleife lap times will finally shut up.
Yeah Baby Yeah ! http://www.worldcarfans.com/9080501.002/official-nissan-announced-gt-r-laps-nurburgring-in-7m-29s Official, Nissan Announced GT-R Laps Nurburgring in 7m 29s The Nissan GT-R can now lay claim to being one of the fastest production cars in the world after GT-R chief test driver Tochio Suzuki completed the famous Nurburgring circuit in Germany in just 7 minutes 29 seconds. According to our records, this puts the GT-R in second place for fastest laps by unmodified production cars just behind the Pagani Zonda F which posted a time of 7 minutes and 27 seconds last November. The time completely destroys the GT-R's previous best lap of 7 minutes 38 seconds achieved last year in slightly damp conditions. Kazutoshi Mizuno, Chief Vehicle Engineer for GT-R said “At last year’s testing, we were frustrated by the conditions at the Nürburgring, always believing that the GT-R could go under seven minutes 30 seconds, the GT-R proves it is among the fastest mass-production cars in the world. We set out to build a multi-performance supercar accessible to anyone, anytime and anywhere – I believe the GT-R has delivered that promise.” The world can now look forward to a response from the GT-R's main competitor, the Porsche 911 Turbo whose best time stands at a lowly 7 minutes and 40 seconds. It's hard to believe! Wonder how hard the Zonda F will get it with the V-Spec... But I want some unofficial times now with video and stopwatch... Two seconds of a hypercar that weighs half a ton less and got 100 more hp is a little hard to believe...! Faster than 800 hp Koenigsegg... Kudos to Nissan though. Much kudos indeed.
And I love it's high tech advant garde looks. The USA car companies lost out to Japanese design years ago and the European companies have now seemed to lost their way as well. I can't wait to see what Honda does with it's new NSX replacement...
Say what you want about 'ring times but Porsche got owned in their own back yard. In their own country, in their own game, by their own rules.
"Nissan Announced GT-R Laps Nurburgring in 7m 29s" "According to our records," Yeah, seem official to me. *rolls eyes* Why do they say the 911 is their competitor but they you guys claim that Porsche was beaten? Put the fastest road going Nissan against the fastest road going Porsche, then you can claim one company is faster than another. The way I see it, is Nissan threw all their love juice into this car and is now picking on a little brother from the house next door. Sounds weak to me.
The Carrera GT has a time of 7:28 by Walter Rohrl, so no, Porsche didn't get owned. In a few years, it probably won't matter since we seem to be in a supercar "recession". I mean, no one (besides a few) seems to have a full-fledge supercar. I know we have the 997 GT2 and the 430S, but I'm talking about cars like the Enzo, CGT, etc. It seems everyone is currently developing one. Saleen has its new car in development, Lamborghini is developing the Murcie. SV, Porsche is working on a hyper car, and Ferrari...well, I don't know if Ferrari is working on a supercar at all. But once these companies are done, I'm pretty sure the Nissan time will shattered by them.
Err.. Nissan GTR is $80k while CGT is how much again ? The GTR is comparable to 911Turbo btw (2+2, daily car, etc) Yes, I'm pretty sure GTR's in no time will be shattered by a >$300k supercar Kudos to Nissan engineers
There's no owning going on anywhere. "In their own backyard" would mean Weissach. The Nuerburgring track is a public road. Fanbois clearly need to understand the science of putting down fair, repeatable scientific lap times, then there wouldn't be this inanity. Let me explain a couple of things you don't seem to understand. Air temperature, track temperature, track conditions and drivers are the primary variables in this equation. The two most significant variables are drivers and track conditions. Without the same driver and without identical track conditions, none of these times can be considered scientific, let alone the basis of any comparison. All these lap times that get referenced are with different drivers on different dates. Different drivers automatically creates too much variability--do you really think all drivers are capable of getting 100% of out of the car at a daunting track like the 'ring? Different dates automatically mean different track conditions--given that the 'ring is a public road full of hoons, there are cars to be passed, oil and coolant spills to be avoided, as well as random debris, which can be anything from dirt, gravel and leaves. Top Gear track lap times are more scientific than any of this 'ring nonsense. Car & Driver's VIR-Lightning Lap business is more scientific than any 'ring time.
So now we're comparing apples to oranges????? I'll take that as a sign of defeat when you start to compare cars from another league. Okey guys listen up: There are car a thing called categories. They are seperated by price and performance. You can not compare a Corvette to a Carrera GT - same goes for the GT-R. You know this very well. Anyone comparing the performance of a 80.000 $ car vs. a car costing 400.000 $ and a metal box vs. CF sculpture car - should be questioned. Then you might as well start comparing the 612 hp CGT against a Veyron because I'm sure Porsche will not make a car with greater accelleration in about a decade or two anyway. The Nissan has already proved a gazillion times that its a faster car where it matters than the 911 Turbo which was the original competition. The Turbo has been a icon for decades. The 911 Carrera was the ultimate daily sports car for a half century (!!!!!!!) until V8 Vantage started to rattle the cage but couldn't, then came the R8 which was a better car than the Carrera 911's and but nobody until this GT-R was throned the king of "everyday car with superperformance" title challenging the Turbo. This is the competition area for the GT-R. Next car in the Porsche line-up to get whupped is the GT2 with the GT-R V-spec. Bye bye 7.28 minutes...... Believe me Porsche is going to buy a few GT-R's themselves to understand WTF just happend. LOL Don't get me wrong, the Carrera GT is a car very dear to my heart. I just think it's hilarious how a little angry martial arts fighter from the far east performs better than cars costing twice as much. Who doesn't love that?? LOL Blah blah this isn't their backyard and so on: Every single time Porsche announces a new 911 they speak about the new 'ring times like if it was all that matters to them. Don't ignore this fact. "The 911 S is as fast as the old 996 GT3" and so on, every time a 911 is released. This means a lot to them. They are sooo owned no matter what you say sir. I fully understand the track conditions issue vs. official vs. unofficial vs. driver vs. all other components for a lap time especially on a track this long. That's why I can't wait for Stiggy to get behind the wheel.
Please try to present a valid argument; supporting facts would help. Performance driving is a science and without repeatability, lap times are irrelevant. Plus, we don't even have to get into the clearly unofficial nature of these lap times. Show me where Porsche indicates their 'ring times. A search of their last sixteen months of press release reveals that they provide financial and technical support to the facility (http://www.porsche.com/usa/aboutporsche/pressreleases/pag/archive2007/quarter3/?pool=international-de&id=2007-07-23). That is all. I suspect, though, that your on-track experience is limited and that's what is clouding your judgment.
Top Gear had a small note on the achievement on their website. It is interseting to note that the care did this lap on stock tires.... http://www.topgear.com/content/news/stories/2820/
I dont see how the 911 is the little brother.. for the longest time the 911 was considered the benchmark for sports cars, only recently has the likes of the R8 and now GTR been beating them, also at a starting price of north of 75G i dont see how the 911 is the little brother you figure the turbo is more against things like the 430 etc.
So? He's the one who said Porsche got owned in their own backyard. How did they get owned when there's still a faster Porsche? It may be more, but it's obvious the Nissan can compete near it.
I love the zonda F and the CGT,.. but for 80k... you have to admit the Gtr.. is really impressive... Cheers to the new GTR,
Nissan has been running on the ring for years with past GTR's. They know the track inside and out and know what a car needs to be to dominate it. I think back in 1995 they ran a 7:59 with the R33 GTR, a car with under 300 horsepower and close to 3,400 pounds. Their sights have always been set on the ring, and with over a decade to bring a new car 30 seconds on a eight minute track is almost expected. If someone wants to claim bull****, then he can go right ahead if it makes him feel better. Everyone has a right to his opinion, whether or not it's just denial.
