I agree, and I think that we (past 3/4 generations) 12 cylinder owners may be more attuned to this concept than the new-gen 430 buyers.

The rule used to be that Ferrari was 3000 lbs/ 300 hp for a grand touring car, around the 3000+ lbs / 365+ hp for a special model.

If the car is of sufficient beauty, character, and charm - then that is all that ever was needed. And that may be even more true today.

I agree 100%. Without offending anyone, I think the Lotus Exige is every bit a sports car as the 430 Scuderia or 599, despite the obvious horsepower deficit. Imagine if that car had been designed by Italians with an honest to goodness ultra light, screaming Ferrari flat crank V-8 made of exotic materials and redlining at 10K in a slightly longer Pinin body of carbon fiber, and all the formula one derived technology that could be packed in! Glorious!!!

If there is one thing I have learned from this board it is that Ferrari owners and lovers are not nearly as consumed with 0-60 and outright HP as the Car mags and typical american teenagers. I think we have more in common with the Europeans focus on balance and handling than the point and shoot focus of American cars...just my. 02

i think Ferrari's direction is spot on and may just reignite my interest in modern Ferraris.

I think that there are 4 kinds of Ferrari owners out there, "The Enthusiast" who has the car for what it is, the finest most adept thing on the road, that brings ultimate pleasure when hitting the apex of a turn or simply cruising down an avenue.

The "look at me" who only buys it cause they have the money and want to show off, this is who wants the HP#s and 0-60 times, but can't control the thing worth a damn.

"The Collector", who has them for the fact that they have to have them and more of them, this owner does not really drive it but off the trailer and into the show, not that there is anything wrong with this, beauty needs to be appreciated.

Finally, "The Legacy", those lucky few of us who have been part of the Ferrari family since birth, I was brought home from the hospital in what is now my own 1971 365 GTC/4 which then was my fathers daily driver.

I put myself in the 1 and 4 categories. My love of the Prancing Horse is deep, and has been as I said, from birth.

Speaking as a 430 owner (3.5 years) and a 328 owner (about 9 years), I do not care if the 430 replacement comes with more power. Even at my lofty, power robbing 8300 foot altitude, the 430 has ample, ample power. Unless you are into making jackrabbit starts at streetlights all the time, there just isn't much use for the power on the street. Redline in 3rd comes at about 95MPH. There are times I wish it had a 150 top speed, less power and shorter gear ratios so I could wail on it more and shift it more. Of course, other times going from 6th to 4th and dumping the throttle on a two lane to pass someone is extremely satisfying as well. On the track, it's a different matter where I can experiment with throttle steering and get well over 100 on most tracks but I am an amateur and not bad for one but I know it is way more car than I can exploit fully.

Alex mentioned equilibrium in cars. IMO this is what makes the 328 so satisfying to drive even though it is light years behind my 430 performance wise. Like most 3X8 owners, there are times I wish it had more power but I think most long term owners realize that messing with the car's equilibrium might make it worse, not better. For instance, more power might overwhelm the chassis and brakes. Likewise, a better suspension might make the power feel really anemic. The way it is feels just right.

I know there are a few other threads about the car, but they have gotten sidetracked and don't have pics like these, or they're mostly about the engine.

The car has mismatched wheels and weird-looking arches, but it gives a hint at the overall stance of the car. It looks like it will be a little bigger than the F430.

I personally can't wait. Even if the car won't accelerate as fast as an AWD lambo or gt-r, it's a purer car being RWD. As for the name debate: who cares. They could call it 'Zarbok' and I'd want one.

The red car has been rumored to be the "f-70" or Enzo replacement test mule...

Note the enzo tailights fixed to the rear.

    Extra intakes in rear decklid

    Extended wheel base.

    Large central exhaust pipe...

    Etc.

This test mule however seems more likely to be the test mule for the f450. No need for drastic changes for a similar chassis

Revision of intakes. new standard position for exhaust.

Compared to the other test mule which has Vast Intake additions( for a larger engine maybe) suspension adaptations which is more indicative of the possible F-70 rumors

Read that the new engine will be 4.5 liters. Wonder what that will be worth in terms of HP and torque? Maybe 25 hp more?

It will be interesting to see what the Aero improvements will be and how these will affect performance/ fuel efficiency.

Since reducing weight through the use of innovative material is going to be a goal for future Ferrari's, it makes sense to improve the aerodynamic performance so that the complete package works as a whole. Lighter car with better downforce, to keep it glued to the road, while still keeping drag in check.

All found this link. Didn't see anyone else post this yet. Dont know if it belongs in here or not, if not then feel free to move this post to where ever.

    Good info though.

Here's the info incase the link doesn't work.

    http://www.worldcarfans.com/9090316.022/ferrari-f450-test-mule-spied-up-close-during-winter-testing

Further spy images of the forthcoming Ferrari F450 have emerged. The test mule was shot while testing in Sweden in conditions which are not ideal for a rear-wheel-driven Ferrari. Nevertheless, ice-cold circumstances are part of the development process if reliability under any kind of weather is to be claimed.

Boasting over 500hp the F450 is even rumoured to have a higher power output than the 520hp F430 Scuderia. Ferrari will use the same double-clutch gearbox from the California for the F450 to double-up with the envisaged 4.5-litre V8. How the global financial difficulty has affected the scarlet marque will be seen in the F450 through possible technologies like a road car version of KERS (Kinetic Energy Recovery Systems).

The mule in these pictures may be disguised as an F430 but the differences are easy to spot; wider fenders, the air scoops and that centrally-mounted exhaust pipe give the guessing game away.

Ferrari has apparently codenamed the car F142 and it is expected to make its first public showing at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 2009. Deliveries would then commence just over a year from now.

all the scoops, it looks like it need air flow. The cut outs in the back down under look like perhaps twin turbos. The radiator grills have been moved forward so the radiators must have been enlarged? Looks like more power and inadequate air flow. I am sure the final example will be dialed in one of the cars to have. Should be fun!

Probably won't happen until after (or slightly before) the car is officially announced. Similar to the California.
