A few months ago I decided to free-up the exhaust a little bit by replacing the main cats with high-flow cats, by pass the pre-cats, and put a stainless-steel exhaust.

My mechanic told me over the phone that my main cats were pretty messed up and that I did good to replace them. I picked up the car late in the day and he was already gone so I didn't see the cats, but asked them to put them aside for me.

I finally picked them up last week and saw how they looked.

    Oh boy.

The left side was a little clogged with a with a grey-ish powder, but not too bad, but the right side had collapsed... The cells were broken and the metal actually melted! It was a strange mix of broken parts and pearls of metal.

The cat's intake was where the problem was, so at least I didn't have pieces flying out into the muffler.

The bottom line is, take a look at your cats!

Apparently the ones on my TR caught on fire, luckily in time to put it out, so they were replaced with Hyperflows.

It gives me only very little extra sound / noise but no cats give me a lot of smoke extra ...

When I bought my car it had Tubi exhaust with the main cats deleted. I never really thought to look all that closely, so I didn't notice that I still had the precats installed.
I didn't notice, that is, until my right ignition coil module failed and I started pumping raw fuel into the exhaust system on the highway. I have to admit, it's VERY unnerving to be going 80 mph and seeing burning embers start following you. I pulled over and shut off the engine before any real damage was done, but during the repairs I pulled the precats to see what they looked like inside. There was no screen left whatsoever. All of the innards had been broken apart and burned up, apparently for a long time. Since I didn't have main cats, I just went with the Hyperflow precat delete. I can't even begin to describe how much it felt like a completely new car after removing such a large amount of interference from the exhaust system... Not to mention, the exhaust note now is amazing!
