Would like real opinions from owners or former owners. Considering a minor project Merak, what to look for, are parts readily available, what year to avoid, approx how many units still out there, are there distinct advantages to the newer over older models. etc. How are they to wrench on by a DIY'er.

What about this car, any problem with it being a Euro model?

Looks lovey, but it is a "tax break" 2 liter version (2000GT) made originally exclusively for the Italian market. Makes the car underpowered compared to the 3 liter models (both regular and SS versions).

Rare leather interior for a 2000GT.

I doubt it was red originally...

In general, the Merak 2000GT is a nice car with some ultra-rare options (some cars have a blue velvet interior, but not this one). Yes its only a 2000cc V6 engine. In my opinion, I think it doesn't make a real difference, we don't race these cars, and its good enough to enjoy the car.

Since the 2000GT is rare even among other Meraks and it doesn't miss anything else compared to the other models (same shape etc) its beautiful, a great classic Maserati.

About this particular car in the advert, I see the following items:

    - the VIN is fake, obviously.

    - overall it seems "complete", but it shows signs that a imbecile tried to "prepare" the car for sale, without using real/original spare parts. For example:

wrong rear "maserati badge", this one is from a Biturbo car
    missing rear "2000gt" badge
missing rubber seals under the buttresses
    wrong radio antenna
    wrong windscreen wipers
wrong rubber seals on the doors
another biturbo trident between the seats
right door leather looks a bit too "shiny" maybe its just the photo?
wrong red colour on the letters of the engine script
some modern cables in the engine bay
engine cover brackets shouldn't have been painted red when the car was repainted
side badges are obviously not original
    wrong tyres
missing one handle/pump thing from the front bonnet and the one there is not original and wrong for this car

pretty much the above is just finding the correct parts, ordering them and just fitting/replacing them.

the delamination of the windscreen is not an issue unless its extensive, most cars of that era have it around the edges and further issues can be prevented if the screen is removed and treated by a professional.

the only thing that worries me a little bit, is the front air intake (beneath the hood grill, behind the air fans) which seems all wrong, rubber seals are wrong, some deformity and that may indicate a larger problem, or at least the hood my not fit properly and water may seep inside the storage area.

sorry for the long post :)

My opinion is to spend a little more and an offer on the black one.

Concerning color, above it was questioned if it was originally red. I've read that after MY77 or there about, there were only two colors, metallic blue and goldenrod. That can't be true is it?

Also, does the 1980 2000GT 2.0 liter have one carburetor, or multiple?

Should still have the three 2 barrel Webers, though maybe of a different size than the 3 ltr. or the SS's.

The 2000GT only came in these colours:

    Argento (silver)
    Celeste Chiaro (light blue)
    Oro Longchamps (gold)

There are no records of any red 2000GT's.

Interestingly, there are few "special order" Meraks, one such example is a unique Australian Merak which was ordered as "Champagne Verde", a one-off colour specific to that car.
