I'm checking the timing with an adjustable timing light and to get the mark to show up I have to turn the dial to almost 50 advanced. and it runs OK and doesn't ping, book has it at single digits btdc. I'm trying to figure out why, I would think it would run horrible that advanced at idle... I've tried running it at the 6 btdc but it just rumbles/with muffled backfiring...
curious if anyone has tried these timing lights and if the bosch system fools it somehow.
    regards,
    Charles

Could it be something else, though? Vacuum leak, perhaps, and so the vacuum advance isn't working properly, and so when you advance the timing manually like that, it's helping?

The vacuum retard is working but that's only good for 10-15 degrees I think. I'm thinking something very different.... cam timing and valve adjustment so off that it needs serious advance to run decent? right side headers glow red hot, drivers side, not so much.

Just got it so still investigating what I have to work with. valve covers will come off tomorrow so I can verify valve adjustment and ballpark cam timing so I can rule those things out. timing mark on flywheel was confirmed with tdc of piston #1

    Thanks for the feedback

Wow, the header thing you mentioned, does not sound good - could you posssibly have a loose timing chain that skipped over a link or two? I wonder if a compression test might help - maybe see if the hotter bank is running significantly higher compression than the other, for example?

    Is it detonating at all?

I'm new to these cars, too, so I'm not saying definitively this is what happened... just trying to postulate some possibilites with you.

I solved my timing issue that required 55btdc to run....Previous owner had the wires on the cap wrong.... I spotted it after looking at photos of other Meraks. Can't believe I drove it like that. 1 was were 6 was supposed to be and so forth... Runs great now. Enjoying your posts on your merak sorting process.
    Regards

Cool - glad you got it sorted out. Wonder how many miles the P.O. put on it that way?
