The battery in my MB is exactly 5 years old. As far as I know there is nothing wrong with the battery. Should I replace the battery just as a precautionary step? Is 5 years a long time for a battery to last?

Cold is what kills a battery. Seeing as you live in Scottsdale this is not a problem at all for you. In your type of climate 10 years should be easy for a battery. Come to Canada at -40 Degrees C and then 5 years is still on the early side to change.

I'd estimate a 3 yr ave. for me depending on use. I've never just changed a battery as a precaution but it would save you the headache. Mine have usually died at the house so I've just had AAA pick it up or had it replaced right here. So, I've been lucky.........

Usually my batteries die more from lack of use, not over use. The battery tenders have done a great job keeping them ready.

It seems the batteries of today last a lot longer than they used to. I bought my toyota 7 years ago this month and it was used when I bought it and it still has the same battery in it. It as been below zero every morning here for almost the last week and it has started right up. I previously had thought that batteries only last four or five years.
