They should've done this from the beginning. Like the Defender 110.

Actually, the LWB model is the standard 4 door. The SWB is the 2 door. The one in the first post isn't what is called the "LWB" as that is reserved for the regular 4 doors.

Thanks for the correction. I thought it would be the LWB because I haven't seen that tag on a US G model. Can you explain why this has it then?

That looks longer than a standard G. The ones in the U.S. are the smaller, non-stretched variety.

I've been trying to figure out how Mercedes classifies a car as "LWB." i.e. I've seen a lot of 2000+ S500 advertised in german classifieds as LWB yet they look exactly the same as the US versions. It's not like BMW where they stretch the rear passenger compartment about half a foot for the Li and i distinctions. Let me look up some more stuff, brb.

Edit: Well, I went to the German MB website to configure a G-wagon. Still only had the option of the 2 door and the regular 4 door we have in the US. They even called the 4 door the "Langversion", as in long. Looks exactly the same. I'd still like to find out about the extended one pictured above. Looks a lot better like that.

    The long way home

Not sure about the US market, but in Canada, the 2000+ S-Class only offered the S430 as a SWB. All other models were standard with the LWB.

The picture almost looks like it says G55L?

Thanks. Makes a little more sense since the black one is a G55 and the silver G-wagon has AMG rims.

In years past in the US, and still in the rest of the world, MBZ sells two body styles in the S-Class. While they are no longer badged as such, they are the long and short wheelbase. Remember the old S-Class cars? The 560SEL? the 300SE? The L in those designations was for the longer wheelbase.

Current US cars are all the long wheelbase, and the short cars are not offered here. In the rest of the world, you can get a short wheelbase car.

The G-Wagen pictured is a custom AMG offering as mentioned in a post above, and is not currently available in the US.
