They're pretty nice trucks, supremely capable offroad. Too bad a lot of posers buy them and never experience what it was built for.

Handling is mediocre and brakes are 'acceptable.'

I would get a RangeRover instead. In fact I did...

I love them.........they drive great and really turn heads. Like driving a bank vault on wheels. And as far as off roading goes they are on par with anything out there short of a Hummer or an M1 Abrams.

The Canadian Army just bought a bunch of them in military spec. They are in fact a military vehicle built to meet a NATO competition back when..............

    Hey Eli,

Great looking cars but drive like a Mack Truck!!!

I brought one home for my wife to drive and she begged me not to make her drive it.

Range Rover's are the way to go

It is a military truck, 30 years old!
MB added a lot of crap to it (leather, wood, powerful engine), but it is what it is,and if you consider as such, it is great. It's heaps better than an H1, IMO.
If it wasn't for the damn pimp-trendy factor induced high price, I'd be all over it.

Among the very last of the actually tough trucks. Love it.

Some love em some hate em. I have an 02 and think it is awesome. I just imported an 05 cabriolet as well. The G gets more looks than my 355. The g55k is a beast. I wouldn't get older than an 04 and check the service history with the vin at a MB dealer. This should tell you if it has been plagued with problems as some are. I like the Rover but they are too common. The benz is a specialty vehicle.

I owned a 2002 G-500. The short version is MB re-purchased the vehicle back from me. The car was in the shop 6 weeks of the 11 months I owned it. MB knew they had a problem and finally came clean. I thought the handling was very poor. The car vibrated so much that my hand would go numb once in a while. I bought it because I thought it was so ugly it was cool. Maybe by now they've worked out the software issues? I would not buy another one. My friend has the new Range Rover and I think it's a much more refined vehicle (IMO).

let's not forget this is a truck, not a luxury sedan. The brakes and handling aren't supposed to be fantastic, the ability to climb mud hills is. Sounds like a lot of people bought these to drive on the road

I owned a G500 for a short time and although I liked the truck, it was not as refined as I thought it would be for the price. My wife drives an ML55 (we got both trucks the same day), but I have since sold the G and bought a new Range Rover ... in my eyes it is the best SUV available. It will get through any weather, and the warranty makes the minor issues livable. Its superbly comfortable, solid feeling, easy to drive, and its looks are wonderful. You need to drive both to see the difference, but I am sure you will pick the RR.

I own one and from first hand experance can tell you the only problem I have had is that the steering wheel doesn't adjust up/down sometimes in over 35k miles of at times hard driving.

Also, take the time to read some of those problems, most are hardly anything to run home about.

I drove a LC, they also drive like well, a lexus. (I would rather go to a dentist)

The MKIII drive like the BMW they are under the LR badging.

Well I hope you do continue to have good luck with your RR.
I like the looks of the RR very much, But I have a Lexus land cruiser
and I love it, very nice ride and also has high and Low range, front and rear lockers.
Its a heavy duty serious 4X4. But mine is set up with street tires so I can't brag.
Maybe someday I will use it like its ment to be used :)

Standard G Boxes are as common around here as Range Rovers.

I'd go G55 or Cayenne Turbo.

good point ..my business partner and i almost bought the local land rover dealership 3 years ago..at a very low price...but the reliablity issues and owner compliants and law suits were a night mare and ultimately broke the deal..apparently the 04 and 05 s are better, and sales are up the last few years, but no offensive to british, but the history of reliablity in english cars is abismal...and i love always loved lotus, jag, rangeorovers, mg, truimph, rolls and bentley...

    I'm going from 5 RRs (incl. '03 and '04 westminster)to '05 G55 Kleemann stage 3.
RRs became a dime a dozen here, all my neighbors drive them in winter and rarely see any G55s.
It definitely will not be as comfy as the RR but with over 600 hp should be a hell of a brick on wheels.
Besides,it will be my wife's driver and she wants it.

This is why I like the RRs. They are made in a BMW build and designed factory using BMW designed parts. If you sit inside the current range rover, it 'feels' more like the last generation 7 series then the last generation RR.
