Wanted to get everyone's advice on my purchase of an 07S550. It just came in today, but I am having second thoughts about it because it does not have night vision. Do you think I should wait until night vision is available and order one or do you think its a useless feature and just buy the one that I ordered? The dealer has no problem ordering me one.

Don't have pictures, its sitting at the dealer. As for driving without night vision, I never had used it. It is a new feature on the S class.

I test drove the S550 3 weeks ago. I was less then impressed with the power and interior. Personally, I like the exterior........

I got a call from the dealer last week that 3 S550 were available because the people that ordered them passed. I had to tell him again, no. Now maybe the 600 will change my mind, I don't know.

Now, for the question you asked. There are a few features that set the S apart from the rest. NV and Adaptive CC are a few. I don't understand purchasing a car if you're not going to get the advancements.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

Thanks, quick question, you said you were less then impressed with the power and interior. Can you be more specific as to what you did not like about the car? How does it compare to the old one?

I'll try......... PM me your number if you want to talk.

Power - lacking, no seat feel. I didn't have an opportunity to test it in the corners as the area was too residential. But, I had a nice straight with light and was able to put it to the floor. To be fair, I was looking for the torque of the S600.

Interior - In my opinion, the parts looked "plasticy" and hard. The design reminded me of the BMW 7 series. The leather was not top quality. Once again, I'm comparing this to a W220 S600.

Have you had a chance to see for yourself?

I remember TopGear doing a review on the new S-class and the Night Vision feature. In short, it was found to be absolutley useless. They positioned a person a certain distance away (forget the actual number) just far enough that with high beams you can hardly notice them standing there. Then, Night Vision was activated and the screen failed to improve visibility. It did not show the person standing there, at all - even though with the naked eye they were able to see the man standing there.

Perhaps someone can find and link the episode here, but it was decided that the feature was more of a cool tech factor than anything practical.

How long have you been driving without night vision?? Have you ever hit anybody as a result?? Would you ever be able to really determin that this night vision is really worth the extra money?..

All in all..its a gimmick. Invest in a good set of headlights, drive at safe speeds and keep your eyes on the road. No amount of night vision will help if the unavoidable happends.

if i were to get the new benz i would want the night vision, not to see at night, but just to have it, basically to show off (dont take this statement the wrong way :), iam a huge mercedes fan, but the new s has not made a big impression on me. honestly it is the first mercedes that i really dont care for.

Didn't Cadillac do nightvision already on the Deville...like 4 or 5 years ago?

It is no longer an option on the DTS...this should tell you something...NOBODY bought it. Until they can perfect the system to something similar to the Gulfstream EVS I would pass.

So you would throw away money at something that sounds like it is useless?

Its not useless(well maybe it is), its a gizmo, a toy, more buttons. there are many options out there that are useless, but when we go to a dealer we are the first to start checking the little boxes. and when resale comes, i think it will hold better.

After Cadillac did it, I think Lexus LX470 had it.

Either way, I can't wait for the AMG tuned W221 :D

I just saw one of these two days ago......liked the exterior........but am luke warm to the interior. This computer techno crap annoys me to no end, I absolutely hate it......and the dash looks pregnant.....like a Toyota Previa minivan.

I could not sit in the car for long.......wouldn't buy it for that reason.

My idea is that maybe you should get the next model year, which is 2008. Mayeb some of the problems will get worked out, and that stupid double antenna on the trunk and roof will get fixed. IMO it looks very ugly like that. But this COMMAND system, I think is far better than the iDrive will be anyday.

Oh ya, get the Night Vision. I mean whats the use of getting a brand new model thats costs a lot and not getting all the cool gizmos they make for it. Its a novelity thing.

I am leasing the car for 3 years, so I guess I am just going to buy the model that I ordered which does not night vision. Knowing me, I am sure I will get another S Class once my lease is over and by then I am sure they will have all the bugs out on the night vision.

Took a look at a new S550 parked outside my office today, seemed really nice. Just I think the last gen S-class was large enough, why make it even bigger?

That makes sense, I guess I just don't see the fun in driving something that big.

Sitting in the back of a S500 seemed just fine to me, front seat was all the way back and I had tons of space, and I'm 6'3.

Saw it in person yesterday. Liked it much better in person than in the photos. The rear exterior looks very nice and very Maybach.

For laughs, I might put my old man in it next year since the modern electronics drive him nuts. He can barely handle FM radio, wait until he sees night vision assist.
