    After a myriad of Ferrari's, Porsche's etc - i thought i'd put an SL55 in the stable.

Most people have somewhat mixed views but what a machine. Over 500bhp with roof down motoring - absolutely love it

    Any other's with SL63's or 55's?

I think you are right. It is an excellent and (currently, but for how long?) undervalued machine. I assume you mean the R230?

I have often thought about it too, but have so far contented myself with keeping our CLK500, owing to the convenience of having two extra seats for occasional use / extra luggage space. It is a shame that the SL's occasional rear seats were lost with the R230, but I guess that was the price of having the convertible hard top, a massive improvement over previous SLs.

Friend of mine bought one recently. Really nice car; very fast, comfortable, classy and useable.

Yes R230. There are many scare stories regarding the ABC suspension etc but in reality, are not that expensive to correct if you're used to car's and the associated bills of £100k + cars

It's very useable and the supercharged 5.5 is an absolute bruiser of an engine. Mine's quite a late car, black over black with carbon trim. I fail to see anything on the market that offers all the SL55 does for such little money Image Unavailable, Please Login

A bit of an idiots review - but it captures the great sound of that supercharger

Looks great. How does the 65 compare with the 55?

    Hi

620 Bhp and 1000nm of torque, but sounds very muted compared to the sl55

Always thought about one of these; a huge amount of car for the money. As I now work from home, could be a contender for my next daily drive.

Will just have to see if there is a decent indie near me first. The main dealer I've dealt with before and lets just say we don't get on!

    Stunning

A few facts i wasn't aware of. The SL55 was the most powerful Mercedes at the time, ever sold. The fastest Automatic and the fastest ever convertible. The engine and underpinnings, founded the McLaren SLR which used the same 5.5 supercharged engine so in effect the SL55 sporned one of the most iconic supercars of it's time

You can see why. The engine is a monster of a thing and quite tune-able to well over 600bhp. Given the era the car was produced, this was nothing short of an amazing feat of engineering and only some 17 years later is 600bhp + readily available in the worlds most extreme supercars

That's cracking. How do you rate the 63 compared to the 55? I'm thinking of buying a 63 to add to the 55

I keep looking at these to replace our Z4.....
I’ve looked at the ads many times but viewed none so what should it cost to get into a decent one?

Mike, you can buy an SL55 AMG from about £12k up to circa £40k. The later facelifted car (2006 / 2007) had slightly more bhp but buy on condition. Better to have a fully sorted early car etc. £12k will probably buy you a whole load of trouble. Check items such as ABC pump / pulsation damper etc. SBC, roof seals, roof motor and all electrics

A great article now i've read it. Certainly cements my decision to buy one. It's one of their hot tips for rising values and no surprise that the M113K engine was highly acclaimed and chosen to power the SLR. It's so easy to lift these to over 550bhp - it's the biggest smile and bang for your buck that you can buy. It's a great accolade that they rival it against a 360 as it's only currently a 1/3 of the price. "It's not just good for a cheaper car - it's genuinely better". Loved that quote :)

I may have to go and buy another :)
