874 coupes, I am guessing that's worldwide. Are these as meaningless as Enzo production numbers, or slightly more reliable?

These are U.S. only numbers, double that for approximate worldwide production, very similar to BMW Z8 total production numbers. Numbers should be as reliable as we can get, they are straight from the AMG site.

The engine is essentially used in each of the 63 AMG line.

The "star" of the SLS is the gull wing doors. Period!

On the engine - the M159 is actually specific to the SLS, the SLS GT, and the SLS Black Series, it has over 120 different parts compared to the M156 found in the rest of the AMG 63 line. The parts differences are largely attributable to intake and exhaust tuning, plus the dry sum lubrication. Nevertheless, the large block MB/AMG NA V8s are being replaced by turbo engines, as is the case with Porsche and others.

I took the 458 Speciale and the SLS GT on sport runs this weekend, the summary:

    SLS GT:
    + build quality
    + the doors
+ interior is vault-like and very comfortable
+ exterior - homage to the past, will likely age well; beautiful in a unique way
+ engine - strong, linear, predictable, feels unburstable
    + sound - German big bruiser V8
For me, probably unmatched on a long distance drive, or as a dd

    458 Speciale:
    + an object of desire
+ interior - entry always brings a sense of occasion
+ exterior - just simply a beautiful car
+ engine - at lower revs, the huge torque deficiency vs the SLS is very obvious, but once she sings..
    + sound - Italian screamer
For me, unmatched as a white knuckle, high intensity driver
