I just hope someone has the motivation to get it going and actually use it.

 

And it's an open wheel car wich almost never do as high. Amazing, but timing is everything. Two years ago things might have been totally different.

 

Did MB or a private person buy it?

 

8 on the phone and 3 in the room apparently.

There's a very good chance MB was one of those.

Whoever bought it now has a very special car.

 

My bets are Mercedes Benz Museum have bought it.
But you never know...

A lot of metal trading both at auctions and privately. Huge 90mmgbp deal reported to be in the works. Two other GTO's on offer and one sold at 52mmusd reported. Ed's NART should be a good one.

 

'...an overseas private bidder on the phone...' seems to be doing the rounds in the press so far.

I suppose there's still scope for MB to be that bidder if they do not wish for their ownership to be public record until its in their museum.

 

For some this is just "lunch money".

Very True. Why park $ when yields are so LOW? People are really looking for cars. A lot of offers being made at BIG $.

 

I always thought the factory owned all of these. Guess not. I visited the factory museum in the very early 1960s.While there Fangio was being given a tour and I spent more time watching him than looking at the cars. Like a dope I should have gotten an autograph.Well I was just a kid, but at my age I am glad I still remember. tongascrew

 

Marcel- money ALWAYS has value, it is always a relative game. Just as these prices are strong now, things can and will change. As one noted collector and expert told me 'before 2020 we will see several up and down cycles'. This may seem like a long ways off from right now but I bet he is right.

Probably the most famous post war Grand Prix Car driven by possibly the most famous post war Grand Prix driver.In my opinion a very fair price. Let's hope it shows up at events from time to time. I can remember at one of the M Ms I attended and saw close up at a check point one of the 300SLRs. The factory often enters the M.Ms with several famous cars which is great publicity. I remember talking with a group of Italians who were at the Ancona checkpoint and were then heading over to Florence to see the Benzes go thru again the next day. tongascrew
