    Here's an idea:

Much like this forum is electronic and networked, I think it's time for a NETWORKED Ferrari club that is PAN-ROCKIES, even TRANS-NATIONAL and which is thus capable of much greater things than the sum of its parts would suggest.

Years ago, the FCA split off from the original U.S. Ferrari club, the FOC.
Today, the two groups pretend to "not get along" at the highest levels (because, duh, they're both competing for the same member$$$$$) yet many many people (like me) are members of both clubs because of one reason or another. In my case, I don't live in Salt Lake or Denver.
And there's a lot of people like me in Farmington, Alberta, Scottsbluff and Billings.

Here in the northern Rockies, there's a lame FOC chapter in Utah and a strong FCA chapter in Denver. I'd like to see a strong FOC chapter stradle the entire Rocky Mountains- from Alberta to Mexico.

I've spoken about this with the FOC officers and also with people at Quickchick Racing's Oct "last lap" PPIR meet in Colo Springs.
The one comment was, "That's a good idea, but who's going to organize it?"

It's basically self-organizing, as each (pre-existing) group, each (pre-existing) community of people simply says, "OK, let's see what happens if FCA Denver or FOC Utah tells its members that this new thing exists and we steer them to their web site." Maybe this forum becomes the networked entity and dues are paid to Ferrarichat and both (print) entities (FOC and FCA) dry up for Rocky Mtn Ferrari owners.

And what about actually DOING ANYTHING?
Again, self-organizing: I basically see a multi-state FOC/FCA chapter for the Rocky Mtns that would have local events, organized by the usual two or three leaders that live in any one city (like Santa Fe-Taos or Denver-Aspen or Billings- Yellowstone).

The idea, for me, is to create a new KIND of club, with a larger, networked membership that is capable of doing larger events - than just one local city/state can support (ie, Utah FOC showed up in Jackson Hole with three cars this year, while FCA Denver had 30 cars on their foliage tour the same weekend!) The problem for the Rocky Mtn region is low population density and greater distances - than say in a place like California or Florida. Denver might have a single exotic car show a year. Crystal Cove in Newport Beach is a weekly affair? Yikes!

I can imagine a "Rocky Mtn Ferrari Club" that localizes its leadership into cities and states (ala Phoenix, AZ, Albuquerque NM, Denver, CO; etc etc) so that things actually DO happen (local, small events that are then communicated to the entire club, via the internet so that everyone can make the effort to go).

There are always going to be just a few people who really get things done in any club. The advantage that I see in what I'm proposing is that the few who get things done in, for example, northern NM could create, via the internet, an opportunity for people as far away as Calgary to participate!

I personally think it would be cool to drive down to northern NM and go on a long weekend drive around Santa Fe, for example. I've never been to Taos. But I don't know where or how to organize such a drive. On the other hand, I know northern Colorado like the back of my hand and could bring Denver and Salt Lake together in Grand Junction or Rifle or Craig in a week of planning! Those kinds of towns WANT "high end" tourists. I know one county tourism official who's ALL OVER ME to bring Ferraris into her town next summer. This economic incentive is at work in towns like Peyson, Moab (check your tire pressure after an overnight in Moab...kids) and so forth.

My guess is that "Rocky Mtn Ferrari Club" events could be organized that would also attract Lambos, Ducatis, anything Italian! I don't think that opening up the club to non-Italian (ie Corvettes, Mattel Hot Wheels or Schwinn bikes) would be a good idea, for example, because of identity-dillution for the participants and brand-dillution for the manufacturers (although I understand Ferrari doesn't do squat for either the FCA or FOC)

Just an idea, obviously from a total Bobble Head

I think if you read through the NW section that we have a do many organized events. We communicate through this site and also through our own club email. We are VERY active and have no problem finding things to do and good causes to promote.

Many of our events and drives are spur of the moment and if you look at the pictures you will see some Lambos in there as well, sometimes other cars too..

As far as the FOC is concerned? I don't even know anyone that belongs to it. It wouldn't be a bad idea if like minded people banded together but that would take a desire from both parties.

    Wow!

    You sure said alot!

But I think you are going the long way around the mountain.

What you are asking for is local chapters that serve areas outside of Denver or any other city you want to name.

FCA has aggressively been adding chapters all over the US and Canada.

I am in the Rocky Mountain Region, but I am also in the Kansas City Chapter. Jim Walters is an excellent Director, but it is simply too far from Denver to KC to do joint events.

If you are wanting to create a new chapter within the Rocky Mountain Region, contact Jim Walters, if the chapter is based out of Kansas, contact me.

Again, what you are asking for already exists....

We are totally independent of the Denver chapter.

Each Chapter is free to take on the personality of its members.

You are simply trying to re-invent what FCA already offers, freedom with the benefit of Regional and National Support.

I can attest to what Chris said.

Largely due to his help, the Las Vegas Ferrari club (previously independent) became affiliated with the FCA as a chapter early this year. At the same time, we joined with the Arizona chapter to form the Desert Region. The two chapters have completely controlled their own activities, although we have a close relationship and cooperate on events when appropriate. There is now talk of a New Mexico chapter being formed within the Region.

I don't know that we need another Ferrari club.

I would rather see an informal, Crystal Cove-type gathering for people with interesting cars. Nothing too organized, just a common meeting place on Saturday mornings that you can show up at, if you're around and feel like it.

Isn't that how we got the apparently ill-fated breakfast club going? I'd love to see someplace like Crystal cove up here in the NW. I'm not sure where would be best or how to get something started though. For guys like me who appreciate all kinds of cars (although I will admit to being partial to Italian!!) it would be great to have someplace to go regularly!

Yes, I agree with Chris, you are attempting to "Reinventing the wheel".

I am in the process of contacting NM owners, so we can organize the NM Chapter. The Desert Region (Arizona) and the Las Vegas Chapter have already offer to help with the organization.

Hopefully, we will have the club functioning by the beginning of the year. If you are interested in joining please send me a PM with your email address.

    Regards,

    Bob,
Very unlikely this would work here....mainly because we don't have the same issues you are experiencing. Here, we have a very actively run FCA region with a very full calender of events, and leadership that is very open to the local membership. Anyone can (and is encouraged, with board approval) to organize an event, trip or drive. With the many resources available as Spasso mentioned, we generally have well attended events. We indeed, have Maseratis, Ducatis and Lamborghinis within our membership as well.

Not illfated John, just a temporary hiatus. I would love to do a Crystal Cove type meeting place. The spot out in Issaquah was pretty cool and Newcastle has been the beginning of many a drive. I think considering the fickle nature of our weather a large lot with a covered area would be handy.

Ultimately I think that because our membership is spread out as it is we should have two or three standard meeting spots, north, south, west/east to give everyone a fair shot without an overly long drive to get there.

I have some choice roads that we have driven many times up north and Dave T has a bunch in Maple Valley. Willis has his favorites out in Snoqualmie. I kind of like the idea of rotation.

Now all I need is to get the Oldslowyellowone on the road.

Yes! and the Messiah will appear and lions and lambs will live in harmony.

I think you underestimate the emnity that exists at an executive level. The truth re the FOC is that they are a Los Angeles Club and should rename themselves the Los Angeles Ferrari Owners Club.

The FCA on the other hand is a beauracracy that eats up membership dues from the regions and basically provides an occasional newsletter and organizes a "National" meet somewhere inaccesible to 99% of its members, but it is somewhere where its executives felt like vacationing that year.

We have an extraordinary chapter of the FCA in Phoenix with really hard working members who put together a veritable plethora of events for the members, from consourses to social gatherings to interesting drives and even the occasional foray onto a track. They do this with absolutely zippo support from the national level and receive a mere pittance of members' national dues towards their endevors.

I think national organizations are a ripoff, starting with the Federal Governnment on down. I would rather see my dues go entirely to my region and let all of the local members do whatever they like without paying punitive taxes to some remote HQ Orgaination for really dubious benefits.

    Mark,

So let's see if we have this right.....you're an exotic auto broker AND an exotic spirit (Rum) importer looking for a $750K seed funding for your Seven Passions Corp.

Not a blast my friend, just a reminder to us all that you can't tell with whom you are dealing on the internet.

We actually were asked by FCA national and a couple of years ago if we were interested in hosting the 2007 National Meet. We spent a great deal of time discussing the request and decided against it. The amount of work required to pull off a meet is huge and we felt we just didn't have enough actively involved members to pull it off while still keeping up with our usual activities.

Then there was the issue of the track. Pacific Raceways future was uncertain at that time. Portland would be a great track venue but would require all events take place in that area and we have even fewer members in Portland who could commit all the time necessary for the meet.

There was a lot of excitement about having the national meet here but in the end it just didn't make sense for us. I hope we can host the event sometime in the future.
