My original clutch disc has metal backing plates behind the friction lining's. They were not bonded to the linings but had a black paint type coating only on the side facing the linings and with rivets holding both linings and backing plates to the centre plate. There was no hint of bonding but some say they were bonded. I also have a Valeo clutch disc for the 2.4 Dino which was definitely bonded as it relied on the rivets holding only the backing plates.
Question 1 should the linings be bonded to the backing plates
Question 2 are new alternative clutch discs with 16 rivets inferior to the 36 rivets of the original

Where did this clutch come from? Can you post a picture?

I just looked up 2 sources I use for quality parts and the clutch discs they provide look exactly as they always have.

Sounds like you got brand X or maybe a rebuilt clutch.

It looks like an OE clutch. I have never found any need or reason to drill rivets out to determine assembly method because since it is the same disc used since the Enzo era V12 we have had zero issues with them. I would just get a replacement of the same design and not experiment .

The previous owner had tried to unstick the clutch by levering a screwdriver between the friction lining's and damaged them,so I was curious and took it apart. I've spoken to a number of clutch supplier's and they tell me there is no need for the metal backing plates anymore as the modern linings are stronger. I've yet to see a new disc in person but in my experience things tend to be manufactured more cheaply than they used to be so not sure I believe their explanation.
