The 2012 US Grand Prix in Austin turned out to be a successful event by nearly every report. Within the 117,000+ Attendance was a significant number of Mexican fans. The rumors coming out of the Austin weekend are that Tavo Hellmund has turned his attention toward a Mexico City Grand Prix, the earliest of which could be 2014. With Mexican drivers currently in F1, it makes sense to strike while the iron is hot.

From what I have read, Tavo thinks The Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez could be rehabbed to suit today's F1 requirements. http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aut%C3%B3dromo_Hermanos_Rodr%C3%ADguez

But Bernie has said "No way" to F1 racing on a rehabbed version of that that old track.

What do you think it would take for Tavo to pull off a Mexican GP by 2014?

not sure but that would be very bad news for the track in Austin, if in fact 40% of the fans there were from Mexico (I've heard that number bantered around but no firm source).

maybe this is a third party to the Austin vs. NY races? i.e. put pressure on Austin on two fronts, now that they already spent the $$ on the track.

I have a really hard time believing that nearly 50k of the fans in attendance were Mexican.

As do I, but there's no doubt that Mexico was represented in a big way in Austin.

the USGPs in Indy easily had 50k (if not more) Colombian and Brazillian fans, and it's a lot farther from South America to Indy than it is from Mexico to North Mexico, I mean Tejas. :)

As an American imagining a Mexican GP, one of my first concerns is the cartel related violence. Is that isolated to border towns or does it go on in Mexico City?

I don't doubt there was a strong presence of Mexicans at the USGP, but I'm willing to bet that a lot of those fans were Mexicans already here in the states, or US Citizens of Mexican descent.

I saw and heard a huge presence of what I believe to be Mexicans and South Americans at the USGP and I do not think a Mexican GP will hurt the USGP or the Brazilian GP. I think it would be a great money savings idea for F1 if the last 3 or 4 (Mexico) GP's were Canada, Austin, Mexico then Brazil.

    Just a thought.

    I sure hope so.

Would be fantastic to have a revival of the legendary Mexican GP. Hopefully complete with what was once one of the signature curves in F1, the long "parabolica de Mexico". :)

And yes, that would be bad news for Austin. Glad I'm going there next year, while it is around. F1 tracks is a fickle business.

Interesting question. Don't know. The lack of $ in NY is puzzling then again, the track is almost there. Mexico needs to build from scratch, but Slim pesos can bankroll it all.

    Here we go again. :)

Well it is Mexico, so it still has a better chance than NJ. Politics in Mexico? HA.
