As I've had no sensible offers to buy my Mexico, I thought I'd take the opportunity to do some cosmetic improvements. It's a thin line between original patina and scruffy and I think the dashboard and other woodwork had probably just slipped to the latter...

Taking out the dash is so much more of a PITA than the door cappings but eventually I had all the wood out. Nice to see the original 224 Vignale body code written in crayon on the back of the glove box from when it was originally assembled back in '68 too. Proper 'matching numbers'.

The wood is solid mahogany, no veneer here at all so stripping the old lacquer was fairly straight forward with gentle use of a heat gun and scraper. And all the sections have had their initial sanding and all the little chips and bumps have been filled ready for more prep.

I'll post some more pictures as I go.

Solid mahogany makes it so much easier. A wonderful wood to work with, too.

What's your "reasonable" range as far as offers go?

'Reasonable' would be something close to the asking price which is £100k, there is wriggle room but I'm going to crack on with this woodwork project and get some chrome redone and then re-market in the new year once the markets have settled down a little. The asking price would then be reviewed depending upon the market direction. I still see the price of these cars continue to rise as the 3500gti / Sebrings go higher and are priced out of the 'usable' range.

On the woodwork, the wood has been cleaned...

And after another half-dozen coats the depth is starting to build-up. I'm letting this now properly cure before flatting back and then applying another half dozen coats. Hopefully it will then be ready for further flatting and burnishing.

Good work Paul. I am still unsure if i will restore the wood on my Mexico or leave it as is with some "patina".....

I know what you mean but the dashboard was spooling the overall effect so I thought 'what's the worse that can happen....' Hence the DIY approach! If the finish isn't good enough I can still pack it away to the professionals.

I am loving the richness of the colour though

All the door cappings and cigar lighter surround are now refitted and I'm really pleased with how it's all looking. I've also started refitting the dashboard which again looks much better even though there is still the lower crash pad to fit and all the switches.

Took the opportunity to take all the instruments out and give them a clean including both sides of the glass which makes a huge difference.

Starting to come back together, just the battery to reconnect to check everything works, then job done. Also too the opportunity to replace all the dashboard bulbs, and re-wire the drivers side electric window to see if that cures the intermittent fault. Refurbished speedo will go back in once I've checked that the cable is good

Congratulations on a great restoration. I'm sure it still looks good even after 5 years. I am just starting restoration of 330 and am currently in the process of stripping out the interior. Ran into a snag, definitely not my first, when I attempted to remove the wood trim pieces for the door and rear panel upholstery. I have removed the upholstery but do not see how the trim is connected to the door and rear body panels. Are there screws under the metal trim recessed in the wood. I am reluctant to pry up the metal strips unless that is necessary to gain access to the fasteners. Definitely appreciate your description of how the trim is fastened and how to remove it. Many thanks.

Correct, screws under the metal strip. You need to remove it carefully.
