My daughter recently purchased a Honda Odyssey van. It's loaded with options including run flat tires and tire pressure sensors. I did some checking into these tires and found that Michelin has again created a METRIC wheel. These tires are called PAX and the size is 235-710R460A. That 460 sure looks like a metric wheel size to me. And after 4 years Michellin is packing it in (see article).

There are going to be a bunch more Honda Odyssey owners out there having to deal with expensive hard to find Michelin tires as some of us have already learned to do. Except the average Honda Odyssey owner isn't going to go to the trouble for their van than we crazy Ferrari owners will. The tires themselves are expensive (only to get more expensive) and replacement wheels are $2000 plus tires. You think Michelin would have learned from the '80s.

Another sweet deal for Corky Coker in the works then. Makes me want to stuff ol' Bibendum into a hole, a 415mm hole.

The whole idea of "tire pressure sensors" is a bad one IMO -- way too much cost and complexity for very minimal benefit.

Another reason to hate my wife's Odyssey Touring...

We just had two tires replaced. The tires are around $160 each, but the labor is $100 each to mount and balance because of the extra work involved with the run flats.

We've owned the Honda (our first) for about two years and have learned to hate it. We can't wait until the kids are a little older and we can get back into a real car.

Bridgestone is pushing run flats in TV ads about every half hour. Do any of the same issues exist with them?

Michelin has a unique way of mounting their EMT (extended mobility technology) tires. All other brands of runflats just mount on regular rims although the extra stiff side walls are a pain in the butt for the tire guy. All cars that come with EMT tires from the factory require an actual sensor to display the actual pressure in the tire. If you did not have this you really can't tell by looking if the tire is low on air or not. Due to the Ford Explorer tire issue a few years ago I think all new cars have to have a system to alert the driver of possible low tire pressure. Cars with out EMT tires typically use the anti lock brake system to see if a tire is rolling at a different rpm than the other tires and alerts the driver to check tire pressure based on speed. I think in the future cars will be required to have the pressure monitoring system. My CTS-V has EMT tires and the ride is definately harsh. I'm actually in the middle of swapping to my winter tires and rims and the slightly smoother ride is welcome on the crappy excuse we have for roads!
