The Super Sports are one of the few tires I've come across that has basically no negative reviews, so I chose them for my Cayman, and then again for my 355.

Everything else will have mixed reviews, which I take to mean that they do some things better than others. The MPSS apparently does well in everything. They even ride better and cost less than their predecessor, the PS2.

I will never drive my car hard enough to explore the limits of the tires, but it's great to know that they are there when I need them.

I've got the MSS on the stock 18" speedlines. They are awesome (and a little slippery when wet :)

Continental has just released a new tire....aimed at equaling or surpassing the Michelin SS but for a lower price.

Anyone replacing tires this year that were planning on PSS originally but are now holding out for PS4S? Love the PSS and need tires this year and not sure if I should snag the PSS while they are still available or wait and go with PS4S. Anyone have any thoughts either way and reasons?

If you can wait, might as well. The PS4S is supposed to raise the bar once again.

No specific date, but my tire guy said may be a few months out...to me that means could be late in 2017, and I don't want to wait another "driving season" for a tire that I'm not likely to personally notice any meaningful incremental improvement with (again, a non-tracked, street driven spider)- plus my guess is it'd be a little more money vs. less expensive. I want to get my old (8+ year old) tires changed this spring vs fall...

Have the Super Sports on my 355 Challenge car. Ran it hard at Laguna for two straight days - 200 minutes of flat out track time each day. The tires stick incredibly well - driving into the pits you could hear the tires picking up rocks. That's how sticky the were after a hard session. Best thing? After all that track time there was minimal wear. I don't doubt I will get a couple years out of these things.

I use them when tracking car.
    Mpss when not.

The cup tires offer a lot more grip on track which I need when I screw the corner up.

I contacted my tire guy apparently the new Michelin tire is not available for 225/40 R18 - 265/40 R18

He gave me some other options like the Michelin Super Sport and the Michelin Pilot Sport

which one should I take? The SS?

Hope you made the appointment- your tires are way too old! My 360 had a front tire that was 10 years old (I didn't realize it was original) and one day I went out to the garage and it was completely flat- only then did I see small dry rot cracks. I had just purchased the car (used), where it came out of a (presumably climate controlled) collection.. I bet your 348 will ride/drive like a different car after getting that 15 year old rubber swapped out!

I'm having problems finding desired size in 17". My guy says Ps2s not available until next quarter.

    I didn't want 245/40/17 on back a bit short I assume.

    What about cold temperatures?
I need tires for my 95 348 Spider (with 360 Starfish wheels) so I’ve enjoyed this discussion. I’d about decided on the Continental ExtremeContact Sport before I started reading about Max Performance or Ultra High Performance Summer Tires (Tire Rack’s categories) and cold temperatures. Basically, Summer Tires are just that, for summer, and, according to Tire Rack and Consumer Reports when the temperature drops to 45-40 degrees these tires begin to lose traction. Freezing temperatures can cause these tires to crack.

I live in Fort Worth, Texas, in a high rise loft and the 348 is in either the unheated parking garage or an unheated workshop. We sometimes have cold snaps here and the temperature drops below freezing for days. So I come out afterward and find my new Continental ExtremeContact Sport tires cracked!?! Or, I take the 348 to Arkansas for a fall foliage tour, the temperature drops into the low 40s and I’m sliding all over the mountain roads!?!

Anyway, I’m now thinking about Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3+, an Ultra High Performance All Season tire according to Tire Rack. Still a Y rated tire (a 348 Spider at 186 mph; not likely!) so if I am ever able to do the “bucket list” trip of shipping my 348 to Europe, she’ll be fine on the autobahn as fast as she can go and still traverse the Alps in October. Just my two cents.

I don't live far from you and I've run max performance or track tires year 'round for many years. I typically don't drive the cars when it's really cold but I've done so on occasion with absolutely no problems. It's a non-issue in our climate unless you want to run the car hard on one of the rare single digit days. I've been a high performance driving instructor for over twenty years and have done literally hundreds of track events, some of them in miserably cold conditions. I'm not aware of a single tire failure in our area due to low temps.

Of course, if you don't ever run the car hard you don't really need to fit max performance tires. But if you occasionally drive the car con brio I'd go with the Contis and avoid driving the car when it's really, really cold. I run NT05s on my 348 and absolutely love driving in cold weather. :)

Right, Mike. I've just ordered them for my 550. I've been quite impressed with the Continental ExtremeContact™ DWs on my 944 turbo daily driver for the past three years. The updated ExtremeContact™ Sports should do just fine.

I'll get these next year when I need to replace the rain tires for my F355 Challenge. Currently I have Hankook Ventus V12 EVO2s for that purpose. They've done well in the rain at Watkins Glen and Daytona.

Testing does not bear out your experience. Consumer reports has consistently rated the MPSS tops for several years now. It is always equal or superior to all other UHP summer tires in wet braking, wet handling and hydroplaning. Granted I don't track, but have never had issues with MPSS in the wet here in rainy Seattle... ;)
