Has anyone else received a recall notice from MICHELIN related to their TRX tires? The problem is they don't have DOT stamped on them as required by the Federal Motor Vehicle Standard No. 49. These TRX (and other from the Vintage Tire Collection) tires were mfgd on or before oct 23,2022.

I just went out and checked all of mine, and none of them have DOT written on them. I have not received a recall letter and I purchased some from Longstone around that time.

I purchased a new set last year, I'm pretty sure they have the year stamped on them. Will have a look.

    Is THAT the ONLY "Defect?"

Not having the letters "D" "O" "T" on them?

Yep, on the place where the DOT markings should be there is a blanck space. Someone at Michelin is going to have a few bad weeks...

The letter from MICHELIN indicates they are going to replace the tires once they manufacture them. The letter says "When your product becomes available, Michelin will send you a second letter with detailed instructions on how to arrange for replacement tires to be shipped to you or your specified dealer or restoration shop."

I'll let you know what happens.

    Good day Mark,

Although their could be other issues, but for some jurisdictions driving on a Public road without DOT approved tires can be quite an issue during a vehicle's inspection, but also if an accident occurred. Some insurance companies could cancel/void the policy/claim. Ultimately, insurance companies can use whatever loophole that is available to them to deny or limit a claim despite their "marketing" efforts stating that they are there for you.

    Cheers,

    Sam

Yep, time to send a mail to the insurer just in case.

I'll just have a look at the European suppliers in the next few months: with a, bit of luck these stocks won't be trashed and we will have some cheap new rubber to install on the spare wheel.

That's a good idea! I can replace the spare that was ancient when I bought the car 22 years ago. :D

Where is Longstone Tire? I'd be curious to hear what they know.
I bought all of my tires from them over the years. I did not get a letter from Michelin however, but all my tires have no DOT marking.

I bought mine from Coker. I don’t remember if I registered my tires with Michelin or if Coker did it. I haven’t heard from Coker on the issue.

Mine have build dates of 2015, purchased from Longstone - no DOT stamp either. They have plenty of rubber on them, but I wonder if I’ll get a letter from Michelin.

In my case, I purchased them from a French seller, so the only way would be that they contact me - which I highly doubt.

Any idea who/how to contact Michelin directly?

There is a contact form. Back then they were quite responsive when the manufacturing of TRX was superseded by TRX-B.

    https://www.michelin.fr/assistance

As of last year, there is a new labeling rule in Europe, just wondering if this could explain the mix-up with the DOT markings.

I am filling out the form, any idea where the CAI number can be found? I don't recall seeing the small sticker on mine.

    Oh, no doubt they're "approved".

Just don't have "DOT" molded into the rubber, and some xxxxhead govt bureaucrat has a woody.

Strictly speaking these are not the same tires: not the same mould and they do wear much faster. Also have much more grip. Presumably "B" coumpound like the new TB15.

Finally they specifically wrote me not to mix them with the older type.

So not sure they did the paperwork worldwide...

Michelin document: "Locating Tire Date Of Manufacture" attachment that came with the letter about the missing "DOT" on my TRX tires.

My thoughts exactly. If that is the only "defect", who cares?

Figures that insurance company loopholes would focus on the label rather than the safety.

My understanding is that some states with vehicle inspections require "DOT" on tires. Personally, I live in Florida so I wouldn't have any first hand knowledge if that's true or not.:D

In Missouri they never look at the tires. As an historic vehicle they never even inspect it anymore.
