Were the Michelin teams that did not run at Indy allowed to put new motors in their cars as a result of the "mechanical retirement" rule in F-1 this year? We all saw Kimi blow up a new motor on Friday & get a new motor for Saturday but, I'm wondering the the other Michelin teams. Thanks

I am really impressed by your post. I think it is quite possible that the Michelin teams have overlooked the possibility to use new engines for this race!!!

It is important to see if the result from USGP was actually classified as "mechanical retirement" or some other term. But under the "mechnical retirement" conditions I think an engine change is fair game.

However, I really don't think the Michelin teams wants to push anymore buttons. They really can't affoard another questioning by the FIA!

It seems to me that I read on speedtv's website (or on one of the sites linked, like ITV) that the Michelin shod teams don't get to change engines without penalty because they did not officially start at Indy -- although they took the warm-up lap, they didn't align on the grid and take the start.

I'm completely lost as to which driver is on which (#1 or #2) engine. Am I the only one?

i thought they were talking about deleting that rule after one of the early races. ferrari pulled out of the race really early and gave them a huge advantage.

Bob Varsha answered the question today during the broadcast of the French GP. The Indy weekend counted as a race weekend for the Michelin teams because they practiced & qualified. Therefore, Indy became a regular part of the motor 2 weekend rotation. The fact that the Michelin cars retired after the formation lap did not give them an advantage, it was NOT a mechanical failure. As stated above, it's become very difficult now to track who is on what motor - first weekend? second seekend?
