I just put on an unused Michelin TRX tire on my '82 Mondial. It looks like an old 'made in France' Michelin. The tire has no dry wrought and the tread looks new; however the tire is very noisy. Will this go away over time? Is there a trick to helping the process? Or am I just stuck with this old rubber?

    Get new tires.

You really want to be rolling around on tires that are over a quarter century old?

my TRX tires on my old 390mm QV wheels still looked nice, but the date codes put them at 1996! they are in a the parts pile in the garage, as rollers if i need them. bought 16's and new tires.

I have tires from 03 that are soon joining the parts pile. Nice tread left, but I also have 16s waiting to go on. I think I might use 1 as the spare...

The TRX is a pretty noisey tire anyway, even if you have one made in the last few years. Tire tech 25+ years ago is quite primitive compared to today.

The TRXs available through Coker Tire seem to be several years old - the last time I checked with them what they had available was about four years old from the manufacture date although, presumably, these have aged pretty well is in Coker's wharehouse. In any case, the TRX is an outdated tire and you're better off going with a modern tire in a more common size.

I personaly have had a perfectly good "looking" TRX come apart on the freeway (not fun). The tire was probably 12 years old, with 40% tread left. I have also had an otherwise nice shape 6 year old date stamp Dunlop SP5000 delaminate on the track (less fun). It's more about age than rubber oxidation or tread wear. I would get new recent mfg date tires. You may find that even "new" TRX tires are pretty old mfg date stamp, not a lot of demand, and $375-400 ea! Plus, the TRX's suck as a performance tire, only good for Concours IMHO. This is why most of us move to 16" QV or aftermarket wheels and more modern tire choices.

If you do a search you will see lots of 328 are riding on Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3. They are great tires. I've had them on my car since summer of 2006. Bridgestone also has some great tires their RE-01 was just replaced by the RE-11, which is probably a great tire although I'm not sure its been in any comparison tests since its so new.

    Best regards,
    Dino

As I recall, many of the 328s came new with Goodyear Eagles. The current version Eagle (see above) is a wonderful tire - fairly quiet, very stickly, clears water well in the rain and all with moderate wear. The cost is pretty reasonable too. If you go with a current Eagle you're sort of keeping the car a little more true to the original spec, and, you're riding ona quality tire.

I bought my 84 308 GTS with 22 year old TRX's on the wheels.
The orriginal owner i bought it off ran the car on some aftermarket rims and tyres. I nearly had a heart attack when i checked the date codes and immediately renewed them with new TRX's. Dispite living in France i could only get 2 year old TRX's directly from Michelin as they only make a pressing every five years or so, more frequently if there is a demand, but these tyres were only made for a BMW 5 series and the Ferrari and i think most of the BMW's are probably in pieces by now!

As a rough rule i was always told renew the tyre at or before it reaches 7 years old as even in perfect outward condition the chemical properties will have changed and the tyre could let go on you when you least expect it or not have the same levels of grip which can be alarming if breaking heavily!!

I am not a concorse type but i never realy push the 308 and so enjoy the orrigionality and ride comfort of the TRX's. The P car well thats a whole different bag!
