Images of the plates used for mounting the cage, both 3mm and will be boxed in, the rear to the main chassis rails and the fronts to the chassis rail and the door post area. These should both provide good strong locations with adequate area and tie in to the strong areas of the chassis.

Also images of the new galvanised inner sills, and a few shots of the before and after from the soda blasting team at Soda Blasting Ltd (UK).

Well the car has gone off to be welded up and so started on a few of the mechanical jobs. The drive-shafts have all been stripped (a messy but fairly easy job) and the heads, and water pump are now off the engine.

Fortunately the heads came off fairly easily a few good thumps with a mallet and block of wood and they were both free. no steps in the liners and all seems ok, but has been running very rich!

The cams are michelotto as fitted to the car a number of years ago and have about 9mm lift.

Collected the new alloy radiator today complete with revised 4 pin fixings and also twin spal puller fans - a really well made product made by Radtec.

Also picked up a really nice piece for the garage on ebay a 1 metre tall Prancing Horse in Fibreglass, it has sustained some slight damage on one of the rear legs in transit (probably reflecting this years more than slightly hobbled F1 effort!)

Welding is well underway but forgot to take some pictures as was busy making sure the box of bits got welded on in the right place (quite a worry when the box of bits was spread on the workshop floor, quite a few more parts than it seemed when making them all).

The front end is now complete with all of the other miscellaneous michleotto style parts going back onto the chassis. Last job will be the cage welding and new inner and outer sills.

Thanks guys turned the corner now stuff going back together and so far no surprises in the engine department so should be a straight forward rebuild with hc pistons and racy cams plus shim under valvetrain. Headwork is already done plus the transmission was rebuilt not so many miles ago so should just be a clean and inspection job.

That looks pretty serious! Safety first though.

I don't know if you've mentioned this before, but have you decided yet about exterior colours/livery when it's done?

For sure the cage will not be going anywhere with the 3mm plates all boxed in - the other chassis triangulation parts will also make a difference - the tubes are probably a little larger diameter (and wall thickness) than the original cars plus I made a change to one of the front tubes for a more efficient structure - should all make a big difference to the chassis stiffness.

The shop doing the work are being very diligent and we have manged to get the car all straight again with the new front chassis leg, we have approx 0.5mm front to rear difference side/side so better than new!

As for final colours will be the VS Olio scheme (White, Yellow, Blue).

Cage now in and most of the new parts on, just a few bosses and bits and bobs to add now. The cage was a little tricky here and there to get access to weld.

Engine and box also pretty much stripped down, no signs of major wear anywhere in the engine so hopefully just hone and drop new 81mm HC pistons in.

Sills now back on and all the mounting brackets for things like the ARB's, dry sump tank and also the radiator mounts. Shop has a few bits of tidying to do and then can collect next week ready for prep for paint.

The chassis is now quite a bit heavier, I would estimate about 40kg of parts have gone back on including the cage but the chassis is now a whole hep more rigid and has some roll-over protection, the original roof structure is scarily flimsy.

Finished stripping the gearbox which was quite a bit simpler than I thought, the main shaft jiggled out complete and the layshaft just needed the synchro ring breaking from it's splines - a few good taps got it loose and then slipped the shaft out.

Plan is to have all the alloy parts soda blast cleaned and then I can wind all of the freshly plated/new studs back in and start putting the gearbox and engine back together. This week-ends job is to try and get all the bulkheads back on the chassis and get all these holes drilled prior to final prime and paint. The front sills will also be closed up to stop water running down the sills and therefore stopping a potential corrosion path.

For the new sills we have removed the flanged and just tacked straight to the chassis rails and this gives a much cleaner look and prevents any potential snagging on anything.

At last things going back on now - trial fitting of all the bulkhead panels and side panels + the most exciting bit is the new rear lower 3/4 panels. New closure panels made for closing the gap around the suspension and new wheel arch panels and the new rear struts have all been cut back now these are all welded up.

Spider, great thread..... This might sound like a silly question.

If you were going down to the tubes, couldn't you have done this with a steel car, as opposed to a glass car ?

It will just be a lighter faster glass car when done. Taking a steel dry sump car in terms of conversion would probably be even more expensive due to having to purchase a complete set of panels as it is I can re use the roof, doors, front clip.

Interesting project, but I still don't get the sacrifice of a RHD glass car for this. Totally agree, however, with you being able to do as you wish. I supported the Germoglio GT4 groovy beach ride build for the same reasons. Your work is very nice...

    Keep the pics flowing!

Rear body parts now going on, fit seems pretty good (there is a little fettling to do on the RHS with the flange to the roof but just requires a small cut and shut job)

The engine cover will need some small brackets making as per the MAT cars to splay the lower edges of the engine cover, I guess when they are made they spring in a little, its about 10mm a side so now major issue as there is this amount of flex in the lid.

Inner arches have been bonded in and the front quarter pieces cut prior to final fitting plus the mounting holes drilled, the car is certainly a bit wider now!

Also finally managed to obtain a grp shallow spoiler from a fellow UK FOC member this week so can hopefully start on the front end fitting soon.

Taking shape - I love those fat wheel arches.
I suspect somewhere in the thread you've already answered this question but what colour scheme are you going for?
It looks like you are doing the bulk of the work yourself - is that the case? If so, you're extremely multi-talented!
